ORTHODONTICS is the specialization of dentistry focussed on the diagnosis and treatment of dental and associated facial irregularities. Through orthodontic treatment, problems like crooked or crowded teeth, overbites and underbites, incorrect jaw position and disorders of the jaw joints are corrected.
Patients with orthodontic problems can benefit from orthodontic treatment at an early age. An ideal time for placement of braces is between 10 and 14 years old, while the head and mouth are still growing and teeth are more accessible to straightening. But braces aren't just for kids. More and more adults are also wearing braces to correct minor problems and improve their smile and confidence.

The dentist will recommend what appliance is best for your particular problem. Braces generally come in 3 varieties. The most popular types are metal, plastic or ceramics. They are bonded to the teeth and are far less noticeable than the bands used before. Wires moves the teeth to the desired position.
The treatment plan depends on how complicated your spacing or bite problem is. Usually, the older you are, the longer the period of treatment. Most patients can count on wearing braces between 18 and 30 months, followed by the wearing of retainers for at least a few months to set and align tissues sorrounding the straightened teeth.
The wires are tightened at each visit bearing mild pressure on the brackets to shift the teeth and/or jaws to position. Your teeth and jaws may feel slightly sore after each visit, but the discomfort is brief. Keep in mind also, that some teeth may be extracted to make room for teeth being shifted and for proper jaw alignment
