Silat is a martial art which is common in the Malay culture which covers Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines. It can also be called such names as: panchak, montjak, silčk and most commonly as pencak silat.

In the sixth century A.D., formal combat systems were being practiced in Sumatra and other parts of the Malay peninsula, but until the 17th century, the name Pencak Silat was, relatively unknown. It is a combination of a Javanese term "pentjak" which implies an art form or artful expression, with the Malaysian word kilat or "silat" which means lightning (implying lightning fast combat).

Some actually believe that the word Silat comes from the word "Silaturrahim" which means "togetherness or bonds that tie".

Down the centuries, many styles developed, often named after an animal, a village, forest, river or heroic fighter.

Pencak Silat has four aspects: 1, Mental/Spiritual; 2, Seni (cultural/artistic, dance); 3, Bela Diri (self-defense); and 4, Olah Raga (sport). In the 20th century, Silat spread to The Netherlands and the United States and, away from its roots in South-east Asia, it developed different styles.

The Institute of Technical Education Pencak Silat Team was established in 2003 and that makes the team very young and inexperienced and has a long way to go to compete head to head with top teams from other more well established tertiary silat clubs.

National Coach for the Junior Match Category, Mr Jasni Salam of Sendeng Pukolan now heads the ITE team in training. It was actually meant at first for only ITE  Macpherson students but somehow news got out fast and the club has fast been receiving student athletes from various ITE institutes nationwide.

Despite the club's young age, it has received tremendous support from many silat enthusiasts. Both Taufik and Hidayat Jasni who are also members of the Singapore Silat Seniors Team heads the team in training as well. This team however strictly does not involve any Perguruans or Silat clubs and all students are regarded as equal. In this team, perguruan or silat clubs does not exist. All we see are students from ITE learning the Art of Silat.

So watch out for the ITE Pencak Silat Team in the years to come.
