Information for volunteers

Temporomandibular disorders or TMD are common pain problems in human communities. Pain is one of the most annoying and motivating factors for human being to look for medical care. A lot of research was done in this field from different sides, and still there is a lot to be studied in this complicated subject.

Our project is aiming to focus more on this problem to understand how it works and what can be of benefit in treatment of these disorders.

Sensation in our bodies is carried across nervous system in form of electrical pulses. For that, we think it is a good way to mimic or simulate this sensation using electrical pulses to produce a similar feeling to naturally occurring pain. Of course this needs special machines, tools, settings, etc. and this is our duty.

Research would be carried out in two sessions, each one about 11/2 hours, and you are going to be reimbursed 150 DKr per hour.

Here are more questions and answers about some terms that are used in this project, and also you are welcome to contact us for more questions.

What is Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)?

Temporomandibular joint is the articulation of the lower jaw head (mandible) with the base of skull bone (called temporal bone). Movement of this joint allows eating, talking, and even laughing!

What are Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs)?

Painful Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are currently viewed as an umbrella term, which constitutes mainly muscular (affecting muscles) and arthrogenous (affecting articulation) disorders. Research diagnostic criteria (RDC) are currently used to classify the symptoms and signs of TMD. The epidemiology of TMD according to these RDC/TMD suggests that around 10-12% of the population is afflicted with a strong female predominance.
