The Meaning Behind The Badge |
|
|
|
Where did the symbol of a Law Enforcement Officers badge come from? The origination and meaning was told to me from a fellow warrior. He explained in Roman times the Roman Centurions carried their shields on their left side when going into battle. The purpose is that when they are lined up waiting for the orders to attack, the shield was their defense from the archer's arrows. If the warriors own shield would be in front they were not able to move as fast. By holding the shield on their left, they could move and protect the Centurion to their left. The badge is worn on the left side above the heart to symbolize the shield that the Centurions carried. The fellow that told me this then stated in almost a solemn manner "With my shield, I will protect you my brother." |

"In Valor, there is Hope" Tacitus From an inscription on the Law Enforcement Memorial
The Law Enforcement Memorial is a place that every Law Enforcement Officer should visit at least once in their lifetime. The memorial rests within the Judicial area of Washington D.C.
On my first visit, another officer and I walked around quietly, paying our respects to the names inscribed on the walls. The above inscription brought a meaning that completely described a purpose. Along the way, I observed a bronze statute of 2 lion cubs at play. Having, twins this hit rather hard (and still does) in relating the vision and the feelings for my sons.
I looked around and noticed that my friend was also teary eyed. I looked at him and said "this place kinda grabs you by the throat." All he could do was nod in understanding. Nothing more had to be said, it was sacred ground on which the valor of our fellow warriors were memoralized. Their feats do not need explaination. Their sacrifice explains it all. |

"Weep not for me though I am gone Into that gentle night Grieve if you will, but not for long Upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace, my soul's at rest There is no need for tears. For with your love I was so blessed For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not, The fear now is all gone. Put now these things out of your thoughts, In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath Remember not the strife Please do not dwell upon my death, But celebrate my life."

A Part of America Died
Someone killed a Police Officer today and a part of America died a piece of our country they swore to protect will be buried with him at his side the suspect that shot him will stand in court with counsel demanding his rights while a young widowed mother must work for her kids and spend many a long, lonely nights the beat that he walked was a battlefield too just as if he'd gone off to war though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast tohis name they will add a gold star yeah, somebody killed a policeman today in your hometown or in mine while we slept in comfort behind our locked doors a cop put his life on the line now his ghost walks the beat, an a dark city street and he stands at each new rookies side he answerd the call, of himself gave his all and a Part Of America Died author unknown |

After this poem had been written, Federal Law was enacted that the flag of our Nation is to fly at half mast when an officer is killed in the line of duty and on May 15th of every year.. |

Psalms 91 |

|
You who dwell in the shelter of the most high, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Say to the LORD, "My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust." God will rescue you from the fowler's snare, from the destroying plague, Will shelter you with pinions, spread wings that you may take refuge; God's faithfulness is a protecting shield. You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day. Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. Though a thousand fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, near you it shall not come. You need simply watch; the punishment of the wicked you will see. You have the LORD for your refuge; you have made the Most High your stronghold. No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent. For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the asp and the viper, trample the lion and the dragon. Whoever clings to me I will deliver, whoever knows my name I will set on high. All who call upon me I will answer; I will be with them in distress; I will deliver them and give them honor. With length of days I will sastify them and show them my saving power. |
