The year was 1990. Junior year at the College of Fine arts in UP Diliman. The group originated from Eric Mateo,
Gary Roxas and Mike Manalo. Called "Timawa" --coined after eating a bilao of pancit palabok at CASAA in less
than 5 minutes, the group also included Mon Fabular, Alf Que, Fred Gonzales, Alex Galvez and Deng Soriano.
However, due to their different priorities and interests, the group did not remain intact. Although still considering
the others as friends, only Eric, Gary and Mike was left of the original group.
Years passed and things started to evolve. Eric got married to Ruth (Villavicencio then) in 1992 while Gary had his
first and only girlfriend, Michelle (Marchadesch then---sayang ang apelido kung 'di ma-publish eh) in February of
1993. Mike, on the other hand continued to wander the planet in search of his destiny. With Michelle and Ruth,
Gary, Eric and Mike's group grew and they became the first five stable members. They would go out every
Christmas, exchanging gifts and laughter (with matching clinking of champagne glasses).
It was in 1998 when the original group--then working at Lintas, Bozell and Logika Ad Agencies, while having
dinner at Sugarhouse in Glorietta with co-employees and friends that included Karen Ferry, Arnold Melorin,
Kat Gomez, Joel Trinidad and May Lopez, when The Punks was originally formed. It was while they were playing
"Name That Movie by Giving A Famous Line or Two" game ...
"Hindi ninyo naiintindihan...the punks kami..." was one of the clues given by Eric. He delivered the line with
feelings complete with a dancestep (swaying hand in horizontal number 8 motion around body while moving legs
alternately at the same time moving body up and down the floor). Since"the punks kami..." was the most
memorable line that evening, it has become a unanimous decision to call the group as such... "The Punks".
September 12 of the same year at Galleria Suites, Gary Roxas was appointed "Chief Punk" of The Punks with his
trademark dancestep (holding both arms in the air and swaying it left to right kasabay ng hips) -- replacing the
more-complicated-to-explain original dancestep.
Since then, The Punks have grown - extending the group to other friends from the work place to forced membership
by becoming a girlfriend or boyfriend of a Punk member. Today, the group is composed of Eric Mateo with wife
Ruth, daughter Alyson, son Ethan and baby daughter Eryn; Gary Roxas with now wife Michelle and baby son
Joaquin Miguel; Mike Manalo with girlfriend Joee Mendiola; May Lopez and bestfriend Jhett Baroma with
girlfriend - Glenda Alejandro; brother of Mike - Ian Manalo with girlfriend Weng Caraso; and Eunice Velasco with
now husband Eric Acejo (so dapat Eunice Velasco-Acejo with a hyphen).
Today's The Punks have become inseparable -- going out to different gimmick places and party-all-the-time
activities (although not always complete in attendance), like in Galleria Suites Events, Birthday and Shower Parties,
Movie Premieres, Concerts, Midnight Madness Sales and Out-of-town trips to Tagaytay, Pansol-Los Baos Laguna
(December 1998), Subic (May 1999) and Club Manila East Taytay, Rizal (December 1999). Sometimes when there
is still room for dessert (well at least...or should Chief Punk say...at the most, once a week, Mrs. Chief Punk heads
the pack to the Punk-tested Starbucks Coffee Shop! Cafea is also one of their favorite hangouts. When money is
the concern, they'll just throw a Playstation Party in the Mateo or Roxas residence, while the girls patiently watch
who will win the Tekken 3 Tournament. Thanks to "Dance, Dance Revolution", now the girls get to participate in
the fun!!!
The Punks! Every year parami ng parami ang members kahit walang nagre-recruit, walang entry forms at walang
nag-a-advertise. It's a world completely different from the usual barkada. Dedication, unity, 100% all time high
original gimmicks (in kabaduyan, kasosyalan at kajologan)and in, well...you get the point. Basta masaya! Walang
plastikan ("maaga akong dadating..."), awayan ("can I talk to you?!") at iwanan (ooops...mmm...PLA!!!).
At kung meron mang mag-react na ibang tao sa kanilang kultura, wala silang magagawa.
"Hindi ba nila naiintindihan? The Punks kami..."
