One Nation Under God?
By David Wood

During the presidential election of 2000, George Bush had been asked what type of judges he would appoint if he were president. Bush replied that he wanted judges that strictly interpreted and held to the constitution. Doesn't sound like a bad thing does it? This is what judges are supposed to do, hold to and enforce the constitution of the United States. And yet, groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union , People for the American Way , and numerous other groups claimed that this was another reason to do everything possible to make sure Mr. Bush did not become president.

It was simple. Those groups knew that when the constitution is strictly held to, this goes against much of what these organizations stand for. They don't want the constitution that the Founders put in place because they know that America was founded upon the Christian religion. This means there is a direct connection between God and government. Is that taught in textbooks? Of course not. The ACLU (Anti-Christian Liberties Union?), the People for the American Way, and other groups that base their entire lives on a non-existent "separation of church and state" have done everything they can to make sure the textbooks ignore the original intent of the Founders.

The recent court case where a court said the Pledge of Allegiance crosses the line of separation of church and state is a perfect example of where this country is going.  Now the same atheist that was involved in that court proceeding is preparing to go back to the same court and demand the removal of "In God We Trust" from everything, including our currency.  This is not going to stop because for the past 60 years, courts have been revising the original intent of the Founders of America.

The ACLU and atheist courts are doing everything they can to destroy the Christian foundation of America.  The stories abound everyday how the ACLU is in court fighting to keep the name "God" out of everything.  These are the same group of folks that want to make sure nobody calls Christmas, Christmas.  A Christmas tree?  No way, call it a "holiday tree".  A Christmas holiday break?  Nope, call it a "winter break".  They are scared to death of the name "Christ". These are the same people that believe the Ten Commandments are "harmful" to school children and don't want a dollar bill to say "In God We Trust."  They also want to make sure that every person has access to kiddy porn on the internet, but if a kid wears a t-shirt to school with the name "Jesus" on it, the ACLU with threaten a lawsuit.  I would suggest to the ACLU, the People for the American Way, and these other groups that want to take away the civil liberties of Christians...If you don't like the foundation and moral principles that America was founded on, get out!  Maybe book a ticket to Afghanistan.  I hear they have some empty caves for rent at a decent price.

But in all reality, these groups are not going anywhere.  It's very similar to when one woman was responsible for getting all prayer thrown out of school.  My question is, who's fault was that?  How did one atheist have the power to persuade the Supreme Court to throw prayer out of public schools?  I would suggest the main group of people to blame for this was those that called themselves Christians.

If Christians do not take the time to learn about the true foundation of America, and if they do not take the time to fight back when wrong court decisions are made, then they have absolutely no justification for getting upset about anything.  This is especially true for parents that have children in public schools.  If you think the schools are going to teach the true history of this country, better think again.  Even some of the largest well know universities don't tell their own students the true history of their own university.  Also, keep in mind that every time you see the word "religion" used, the Founders of America and other writers from that time used the word "religion" to always mean Christianity, no other belief.  Case in point?

Harvard

The rules of Harvard in 1636 stated:

Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life (John 17:3) and therefore to lay Christ in the bottom as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.  And seeing the Lord only giveth wisdom, let every one seriously set himself by prayer in secret to seek it of Him (Prov 2, 3).  Each one shall exercise himself in reading the Scriptures twice a day that he shall be ready to give such an account of his proficiency therein.  (Benjamin Pierce, A History of Harvard University, 1833)

And from Harvard's rules of 1790:

All persons of what degree forever residing at the College, and all undergraduates...shall constantly and seasonably attend the worship of God in the chapel, morning and evening...All the scholars shall, at sunset in the evening preceding the Lord's Day, lay aside all their diversions and...it is enjoined upon every scholar carefully to apply himself to the duties of religion on said day. (The Laws of Harvard College, 1790)

The 2 school mottos of Harvard?

"For Christ and the Church" and "For the Glory of Christ"  (The Harvard Graduates Magazine, 1933)

Harvard is only one small example of the well known universities that were founded upon the beliefs and teachings of Christianity.  Other large universities were: Yale, Williams and Mary, Princeton, and Dartmouth.  Yale was founded by 10 Christian ministers; Williams and Mary was founded in part by a Christian minister; Princeton was founded by the Presbyterians and had a minister as its first president; and Dartmouth was founded by a Christian minister.

Obviously I am only able to touch on a few topics here, but let me end by addressing the assertion that the Founders of America were atheists.

The two most common arguments set forth is that we cannot know the Founders original intent so we must interpret it how we see fit; and the Founders were not Christians but were instead Deists. Firstly, we can know the original intent of these men and it doesnt take a rocket scientist to do it. We can study not only their official government documents, but also read texts of their speeches, personal letters, and even their last will and testaments. Secondly, the meaning of the word Deist can be deceiving. To be a Deist usually means that one believes in God, but the God of Deism doesnt perform miracles and doesnt intervene personally in the world. A Deist believes that God created the world and then walked away from it, similar to a person that winds up a big clock and then just walks away from it. Using this definition of a Deist, there were a few Founders that would fit this category. The problem with using the term Deist is that many dictionaries equate Deism with Atheism or Agnosticism. None of the Founders fit this description.

There are always a few names thrown around when people claim that the Founders were anti-God. Usually the first names to be mentioned are Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and even George Washington. Did Paine believe in God? Notice his words in The Study of God.

Paine states that it is the error of schools to teach sciences without reference to the Being who is author of them; for all the principles of science are of Divine origin. Paine also states that the evil that has resulted from the error of the schools in teaching science without God has been that of generating in the pupils a species of atheism. Sure doesnt sound like Thomas Paine was an atheist.

What about Franklin? Franklin, in his education plan for public schools in Pennsylvania in 1749, stated that public schools teach the necessity of a public religion and the excellency of the Christian religion above all others. Doesnt sound like Ben was an atheist.

And what of George Washington? Washington gave a speech on May 12, 1779, where he said that what children needed to learn above all was the religion of Jesus Christ. George doesnt sound like an atheist.

Critics of the Bible do not want textbooks to convey the truth. How many times have we heard someone say the moral character of a president or politician doesnt matter? How many times have we heard someone talk about the separation of church and state? This is what I find odd when a group calls themselves the People for the American Way, yet they want no part of the foundation of America. Every time I hear someone invoke the separation of church and state, I wonder if they are aware that phrase is nowhere to be found in the First Amendment. It is nowhere to be found anywhere in Americas original documents. The phrase "separation of church and state" was taken from a personal letter that Jefferson wrote to the Dansbury Baptists and Jefferson had absolutely no intention of there being a separation of Christianity and government.  Will school children be taught this? Of course not.

Americans will never be taught the true meaning of the First Amendment because when you read the Founders writings, you see why they wrote the First Amendment and what their meaning of it was. They made it clear the First Amendment was put in place to make sure there was never an establishment of a national denomination of Christianity by the federal government.  This meant that the Founders wouldnt force all the country to be Baptists, or any other denomination of Christianity. Do you ever hear this in the media? Never!

While the ACLU and other groups fight everyday to make sure there is freedom from religion, they ignore the Founders own words when Americas original documents say there should be freedom of religion.

If you are skeptical about anything I have said here, please take a moment to read the following articles. To read hundreds of the original documents, letters, and quotes of the Founders of America, please check out the excellent book by David Barton called Original Intent .
