Holy Land Tour

1/11/00 - 1/22/00

Jordan | Israel | Egypt

After crossing the Israeli-Egyptian border that first night we spent a night at a very cheap motel at the foot of Mount Sinai.  That night at 3 in the morning we got up to hike up Mount Sinai for a sunrise service at the top of the mountain.  There were about 6 other Korean groups that met at the top that morning too.  After the hike up the mountain, some of us were COLD and tired, but I guess my dad was not.

As you can see, the view is absolutely gorgeous.  On our way down the mountain, it became clear to us why we hiked up so early in the morning.  It's amazing how just two hours before I thought I would have frostbite on my feet and hands and just two hours later, I would be sweating from just walking down a mountain.

A short stop at the Suez Canal that connect the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.  Absolutely amazing to think of how much work it took to dig the canal.  Even more amazing is to see how many ships passed by in the short time we were there.

The Great Pyramids.  Of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Great Pyramids is the only one still in existence.  Actually the largest pyramid, the Great Pyramid of Khufu is one of the Seven Wonders.  The monument was built by the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty around the year 2560 BC to serve as his tomb.

These camels were so cool...but a bit of a scary ride if you ask me.

Quickly getting the hang of it though.

Just nearby the pyramids is the Sphinx of Gyzeh which was at one point covered up to its neck in sand.  The Sphinx was finally completely dug up in 1925.  From the picture it's pretty easy to see how sand could cover this monolith.

No one quite knows what happened to the nose but some pieces of evidence suggest that armed Muslims pried off the nose, a religion which forbids all representation of sacred objects.
