Genealogy and the Internet

My Husband has also hinted that he wants me to research his side of the family when I the time (Adams, Powell's, etc.). It's becoming clear to me that once you start researching genealogy, you can never stop. And having one or more names to research just makes the research that much more challenging. You keep learning more and better ways to use the resources that are available to you. Yesterday, when I received the letter from Sheri she mentioned some sites that were available on the Internet about cemeteries in Western Pennsylvania and she also mentioned another web site that I have found to be very exciting and full of information. I went to some of the cemeteries right away and was amazed that people actually go out to cemeteries and copy the inscriptions they find there and then go back to their computers and type all the information in for others. It seemed like such a wonderful and selfless thing to do. Of course, just about everything we find about genealogy on the Internet had to be contributed by someone in some way. Last week I tried something new and just typed in the name Eperthner where you type in search words on Yahoo and I was amazed to see that it brought up informationabout our GEMS Web Site as the first listing! The same happened when I typed in Skermer. You would not believe the the excitement I felt! There is such a vast amount of information out there if we can just learn how to use the resources we have available to us. Sheri also said that she sent a picture of Alice Gouldie Wike McConahy (my mother's mother) that should be posted soon on in our Photo section (Photo's). This is a picture of her when she was young and I am very excited because I can only remember her when she was probably in her sisties. |
