Motherboards
A motherboard, also known as a main
board, mainboard, logic board or system board, and
sometimes abbreviated as mobo, is the central or primary
circuit board making up a complex electronic system,
such as a computer. Popular types are AT and Baby
AT(both oboslete), ATX, MiniATX, BTX(Balanced Technology
Extended, which is newest).
A typical computer is built with the
microprocessor, main memory, and other basic components
on the motherboard. Other components of the computer
such as external storage, control circuits for video
display and sound, and peripheral devices are typically
attached to the motherboard via ribbon cables, other
cables, and power connectors.
Things that can be found on a motherboard
are cpus and heatsink, ram, chipsets, EIDE connectors
(aka ATA or PATA), SATA connectors, USB, Firewire
(aka i.Link or IEEE 1394), PCI Slots (for adapters
and other cards), AGP Slots (for video cards), PCI-e
(PCI-Express: newest slot used for adapters and other
cards, as well as video cards), and other connectors.
