| Note: Just because I give information on Breeding, I am not encouraging beginners to start breeding their Anoles. In fact, I discourage breeding. PLEASE leave breeding to experts only. As the population of captive Anoles increase, so does the amount of Anoles being sold as goldfish-type pets to irresponsible people, who eventually give up caring for their Anole when they realize just how much work they can be. Courting: Mating usually always starts with "courting." The male will approach the female. He will bob his head and do what look like "push-ups." At the same time he will extend his throat-fan (dewlap), and try to stay parallel to the female. The female may repeat the same behavior back to the male. This behavior is also very similar to two males during a territorial standoff. If the behavior seems more aggressive, and the Anoles develop dark spots behind the eyes, try making a loud noise or sudden movement to distract them temporarily, then use this time to separate them into different enclosures. Mating: When mating occurs the male will grasp the female, sometimes biting the back of her neck (nape.) He wraps his body around the female, and he will get his tail and vent region under hers. Eventually, the sperm will be transfered. The lizards may mate several more times in the days ahead, but fertilization will only occur once. |
