Australia's Golden Wattle

Our bicentenary  in 1988 was the year when
the golden wattle was officially declared our
National Floral Emblem.
The wattle had long before this enjoyed this
status but unofficially.

The wattle has occupied a place beside the
kangaroo and emu on the Commonwealth
Coat of Arms since 1912,
 appearing as a floral motif
on many official government documents.

Wattle will always hold  a special place
in the hearts of Australians as this
plant was found no where else on earth.
It's colour and beauty typifies Australia
and is found growing all over the land.

The name "wattle" is applied to any of about 930
Australian species of the genus ACACIA.
The wattle mainly flowers in the spring
where the land becomes waves of gold.

Golden Wattle, fairy stuff
Little balls of yellow fluff
Hear the bees how loud they hum
To say they're glad that Spring is come

When the stars begin to peep
Then the wattle falls asleep
Like a tired child in bed
It droops its pretty curly head

Anon.
