| Since this is the very first Cover Music Review on my site, I'll just explain why I feel it is necessary to review covers. Well, first of all, now that I'm on Cable Internet, downloading mp3s are so damn fast and easy. But the best part of reviewing music covers is simply to increase awareness of them. So that you'll know that your favourite band has just covered one of your favourite songs. Or it they've covered a song that you don't like and made it sound good. Or a band totally screwing up a perfectly good song, the bastards. Anyways, you get the point. So, on to the review... U2 - Paint It Black Take a quintessential Vietnam War song and hand it off to one of the most versatile bands in rock n roll history. Well, with all due respect to U2, I just found that the song was turned a bit more bland in their rendition of such a classic song. To their credit, however, they didn't do anything really wrong with the song - if you can find it, it's pretty much worth the download if you're a fan of either the band or the song. At least it does keep with the spirit of what covers are all about - doing something different with an established and popular song. It's a different sylte, for sure, but one which is slightly less memorable than even, say, Gob's rendition of the very same song (which I won't review here, since you've probably all heard it by now anyways). Although the actual singing of the lyrics in the U2 rendition is faithful in tune to the original, U2 has apparently ditched everything we know about the original instrumental for the most part. This is basically the reason why the song is a bit lackluster, but also the reason why the cover is justified. But when you cover a classic, it's very hard to meet or beat it. A good effort with a fair recommendation to die-hard fans. Cover rating: *** Original song rating: ***** |
