Again, welcome to the group! GOAL SETTING AND MUTUAL SUPPORT ARE THE HEART OF OUR PROGRAM! We are open to all phobics, agoraphobics, persons with anxiety disorders. Or panic disorder who feel they will benefit from group support and self-help techniques. Spouses/ friends/ and family members are also welcome. Our goal is to help each other in our efforts to achieve and maintain recovery from the symptoms of anxiety, panic or phobic disorders. Some of us have just begun a journey toward recovery, others have been recovered for a long time. We can help you by providing information and emotional support as you set realistic goals for yourself to achieve. When we meet, each member of the group is given an opportunity to briefly share his or her recent experience in working toward recovery, such as ~ I practiced driving on the Beltway and was able to go five miles. You will be encouraged to set a slightly more challenging goal for the week ahead such as ~ Next week I plan to drive six miles. Never feel disappointed if you begin with very modest goals, such as ~ I drove half a block today. Thats fine! Or, if on a certain day you dont feel up to working on your goal, do what you can at the time and resolve to reach your goal as soon as possible. Begin where you feel comfortable and set progressive goals! |

Bourne "The last two decades of the twentieth century saw an explosion of knowledge about different types of problems with anxiety and how to treat them..." Available at Amazon.com and other book retailers The following are quoted reviews listed on Amazon.com: SPOTLIGHT REVIEWS 67 of 67 people found the following review helpful: Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard), June 19, 2001 Reviewer: Karyn Piper "karynzmail" (Southern California) - See all my reviews This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful: Desperate to find real help, September 15, 2005 Reviewer: Thomas C. Pino (Merritt Island, FL USA) - See all my reviews My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject. I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped. Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand. AMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEWS 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery , November 9, 2006 Reviewer: Stephanie Parker (Wyoming USA) - See all my reviews This book was very helpful. My psychologist recommended it to help with my counsleing treatment. The author breaks things down for you and makes you realize many things that you can do to live a better, healthier life. It has truly changed my life for the better! I would recommend this to anyone who has anxiety, phobias, even stress. 19 of 47 people found the following review helpful: Magnesium can relieve anxiety; please read this review!, April 19, 2005 Reviewer: D. R Schryer (Hampton, VA United States) - See all my reviews I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine. 43 of 44 people found the following review helpful: This is a wonderful book!, February 21, 2001 Reviewer: A reader This book picks up where the author's Anxiety and Phobia Workbook left off. The affirmations in the back alone are worth the price of the book, which presents a wide variety of ideas for living a more peaceful and satisfying life. The author is obviously a highly sensitive and caring therapist with a deep understanding of these problems. Highly recommended. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The last book we shared was: How to Stubbornly Refuse to Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-- Yes,Anything by Albert Ellis |
