Mike Harris ruins a genuine opportunity
Toronto After 30 years of suffixing any name associated with a scandal with the word gate, the press is really peeved at Mike Harris for ruining an opportunity to have a legitimate Watergate by retiring before the manure hit the fan.
Speaking from inside a hyperbolic chamber, Lloyd Robertson, the Iron Man of Canadian Broadcast Journalism, it says so on his bathrobe, said, Do you know how long we have been flogging that suffix? If there were a support group for suffixes, it would be the one that has its own telethon. How the hell could he (Harris) have done this to us?
We have tried to duplicate the sense of outrage associated with the original Watergate during the last 3 decades with Iran-Contra-gate, Lewinsky-gate, came close with Whitewater-gate and recently Enron-gate. Here was a perfect chance to close the book on all gates with a return to Watergate but he resigned before the news leaked out last week, moaned Peter Trueman, former nightly news anchor for Global TV. But that, too, is reality.
Former Canadian news-pretty-boy and current heir-apparent to Dan Rather, John JD Roberts concurred.
I have always hated the overuse of that suffix. Why did people flog it so? Hows my hair look?
Walter Cronkite quipped, It seems that the gate was closed after the horses ass escaped and thats the way it is!! |
