| The morning of the tenth and final day I awoke refreshed and was so looking forward to this being the last day. All day I would spontaneously break into laughter when I thought about what I was going to accomplish that day, a mix of disbelief and humor that I actually did it. How do I explain to someone normal what I did on my summer vacation without laughing about the absurdity even I see in it? Maybe thats why I decided to do it as a fundraiser for ACS. It was a ride Id have done anyway and doing it as the fundraiser gave it some legitimacy. The day was going flawlessly until Kentucky where I found rain again. But it was a hot day and I had no desire to put on the PVC lined raingear as Id have gotten just as wet sweating. The rain wasnt too bad and was cooling. By the time I stopped for supper in Indiana at sunset I was dry and only had a few hours until Id be back in Fort Wayne. As I pulled the gas receipt marking the official end of the ride in Fort Wayne I had a huge smile and disbelieving sense of great accomplishment. But at the same time a sliver of disappointment knowing that in a few hours Id be back in the daily grind of going to work and there were so many places Id rather be riding onto. At the beginning of the ride the fundraiser stood at a bit over $5000. The week after I got back it topped $10,000. When I thought of trying to raise $10,000 I knew Id be able to get some donations from riders but I thought it could only be accomplished if I got larger donations from the motorcycle industry. Only one Triumph dealer and one motorcycle related business made donations. And of the email and bulletin board type lists it was put on, the members of one list accounted for nearly all of the support received from riders. The Triumph Sprint listserver members donated almost $7000, which included one very generous rider who pledged 10 cents a mile ($1023) and pledged a 50% match of what the riders donated (but was even more generous in that what he made a was a 50% match of what had been raised by the start of the ride, whether Sprint riders or not). I cannot express enough my appreciation to this group who talked it up on the list and encouraged and challenged others to make donations to support the fight against cancer. I had a successful 10 day, 10,000 mile ride, but those who gave donations made the $10,000 fundraiser for ACS a success. I was just (pun fully intended) the vehicle for them to donate. |
