Entry 2 for July 23, 2006
Arrowhead Lake was abuzz with young wildlife on our morning canoe trip. Not only did we watch a young beaver and young muskrat feeding on pickeral weed but we also saw a white-tailed fawn swim from one side of the lake to the other. We watched in awe as it sped across the lake making a respectable wake! Then we held anxious breaths as a ring-billed gull circled the youngling from HIGH in the sky then diving toward it like a falcon. It made two dive bomb runs eliciting a defensive foreleg strike response and threatening vocalization from the fawn. It actually propelled its shoulders and both forelgs out of the deep water (between 4 and 14 meters at 100 meters off shore). We were able to breath easy when the gull stopped its attack and the fawn continued swimming strongly for 5 minutes or so until it reache the shore. Above is the young white-tailed deer making its way across Arrowhead Lake.
