Skipping Stones

Once, when on a mountain hike
With my son, one summer day,
At a lake, we stopped to rest
Beside the shore, along the way.

He took a stone and threw it in,
Then looked around again to find
Another one, he threw once more,
Then turned to me with puzzled mind.

Dad, I cannot skip these stones.
Im not quite sure what is wrong.
I throw as fast as I can
But they just will not skip along.

We searched around until we found
A smooth, flat stone that was just right.
I showed him how to hold it thus,
He then turned and threw with all his might.

It sailed beyond the waters edge,
Skipped five times, then settled in.
He turned around, with beaming smile,
And said, Dad, lets look around again!
