| Flower Flower Awakened with the warm spring rain, Yawning, stretching, for the sun, Reaching beyond with spindly frame, Lifetime, once more, has begun. Leaves unfurl to greet the light And capture from the sun each ray, Arranged upon each stem, just right, Like emeralds poised in grand array. Bursting forth, in colors pure, Like strokes from an artists hand delights, Thin pedals, soft, it completes the lure With fragrance sweet, to all, invites. A silent plea now, from its bed, Toward the ground from which it came, With lowered arms and bowed head, Prayerfully asks for the rain Which sweet as nectar, from above, Falls down upon all life to give, Restoring strength, in liquid love, This fragile form partakes to live. The autumn wind, with northern air, Arrives before the morning light. For tender life, too much to bear, Laying down, now bids good night. Douglas Fletcher 11/23/2001 |
