| Although mostly working as a solo artist, mainly on the Scottish music scene, Dougie also fronts the duo the journeymen and folk/pop band Cranachan. Dougie has been a front man and singer in bands since his early teens playing a variety of music from folk, rock, pop, soul and even punk. His voice has been used in several TV and Radio commercials including talkover and narration. After touring with the "SAW" production of "Summer Holiday" he then brought it to the small stage for the CENTRE STAGE COMPANY where, after recording all the backing music, he ended up - at short notice- standing in for one of the main actors. Dougie first turned professional while playing with the band Under the Covers, after the release of their first album. After the break-up of U.T.C. he continued as a solo artist touring Universities and Colleges around the UK. Supporting acts such as the Proclaimers, Steve Harley, Richard Thomson, Katrina & the Waves, Tanita Tikaram and Paul Brady among others. The highlight being an invitation to the Cambridge Folk Festival after a glowing review in N.M.E. He continues to write his own material and has had songs covered by established artists. He returned to his native Edinburgh to form the Spanners" and while concentrating more on his writing, made the final of the "YAMAHA" song-writing competition. His first solo single release, the rocking Modern World was a favourite with radio stations being compared with the stadium rock sound of Simple Minds and Runrig, as was the follow up, If I Was Your Lover. Although they received regular airplay and glowing reviews both failed to make the charts. The disappointment forced Dougie to look elsewhere for recognition and decided to join Scottish folk/rock band AVALON. Realising the potential of the Irish theme pub market he formed the band Cranachan who have managed to combine the large venue appearances along with regular work on the pub circuit. In August 97 he was asked to demo songs as replacement singer for Runrig, one of the few bands to break from folk roots to international status. Apart from writing and recording his own material Dougie has sang on several albums and singles. One particular single H E A R T S was for my beloved, Heart of Midlothian Football Club which caused a touch of anxiety as Dougie is a well known Hibs supporter. Some of his songs were to feature on an album with AVALON but he left before the album was completed. However a track with AVALON did appear on the OUTPATIENTS 93 album. at the request of FISH whose funny farm studio was used for recording the demos for the album. The album FULL METAL ANORAK was nominated in the NME folk album of the year category and the track West Highland Girl, was used by The Scottish Tourist Board during their 2002 advertising campaign. Dougie's solo act and his band are still very much a live commodity with a substantial following and are a must see on the circuit.
