My Encounter...

It was about three days after Thanksgiving in 1967. My wife and I were on our way to Louisiana from Los Angeles. This being our first trip out of California since we were married in 1963, we decided to take the "scenic" route. We had Thanksgiving dinner in Flagstaff Arizona, and left the next day, arriving in Denver Colorado late that evening. We spent part of that day just looking around Denver and got a late start towards Texas in the early evening.

I took a more direct but less traveled road I thought would get us into Texas sooner than the main highway route. We found ourselves in the middle of the Oklahoma panhandle soon after dark. Nothing but farm houses and fields for miles and no lights, everyone was already asleep we guessed. I have no idea where exactly we were when the highway around our little Ford Falcon lit up like high noon.

I was traveling about 55 or so and the light followed us down the road, a brilliant circle of light matching our speed perfectly.

At one point the only thing I was able to think of was that we were somehow in the exact trajectory of an incoming meteor and if I didn't stop we were going to be vaporized! That's when I slammed on the brakes, bringing us to a stop in seconds. To my horror the light didn't pass over us, it still encircled our little car like a bullseye of death.

That's when I decided the only thing to do was RUN! I told my wife to get out. I got out on my side and as I did I naturally looked up to try to judge how much time we had before this thing impacted. I was frozen in my tracks when I realized the light was now hovering over us. A crystal pure, blue white light of incredible intensity, just hanging there in the sky above us.

After I calmed down a bit and realized we were in no immediate danger, and as a pilot and aerospace fan, I tried my best to try to determine what kind of craft it might be. The conditions were clear, it was a moonless night, no wind, no clouds, and a bit chilly. The object made NO sound, nada, nothing. It just hovered there lighting up the area in a circle of brilliant light for perhaps 100 feet. Where the light stopped there was total darkness, like a laser light might produce. There were no other lights on the object, no navigation lights, no beacons, nothing.

I can't say how long it hovered there while I stared, transfixed. I can say as I write this after more than thirty years have passed, that it burned itself indelibly into my memory.

Suddenly, as we watched, it rose straight up so fast it just disappeared in a second or so. Just sort of "telescoped" down to nothing.

Again, there was no sound associated with its departure, just as there was no sound as it hovered over us. I remember listening for something that would give me a clue as to what it was...nothing.

We stayed there for a few more minutes, there was no traffic on this lonely road, and finally just got back into our car and just drove away.

Of course we talked about it on the way to Texas, my wife asking "what?" And me trying to reassure her it was nothing to worry about. Just "whistling in the dark" I know now. I was scared. It wasn't anything that I knew about, and as I understood the laws of the physics of flight, it wasn't anything that obeyed those laws either.

It still doesn't...

Was there something else to that encounter? I don't know, but we arrived in Texas about an hour and a half later than I thought we would. Maybe my "shortcut" was a poor choice, maybe I drove slower after the encounter, but maybe there is "missing time" too.

I really don't know.

I do know whatever it was that night in 1967, was not "swamp gas" or a "weather balloon." It may have been secret technology that is still a deep secret from the public, but why were they harassing me? What would have been the point? And if it was some "black" program in 1967, why would we have to keep the secret for over thirty years?

Since that event in '67, I've watched the skys more often and since moving to the Verde Valley in '84 I've seen a few more odd things in the night sky. Things that defy current theory on flight physics. Wingless objects that can make sharp turns, lights that outrun jet fighters on full after-burner, lighted objects that rise into the sky silently then just "blink out."

What are these things? I have no idea, but THEY ARE REAL!
