The Reiki Story...

My interests in the healing arts go back a few years. I first looked into the traditional methods employed by the AMA in 1970 and chose to study respiratory therapy at the Los Angeles Institute of Nursing.

I was enrolled in an intensive pre-med program and an 8 hour a day class which focused entirely on the practices and pitfalls of respiratory therapy.

After we completed about two thirds of the course we were taken on tours of the various medical facilities in the Los Angeles area. We toured Loma Linda, Childrens Hospital, the County Hospital, Rancho Los Amigos, ( a chronic care facility for all trauma ) and many more.

I watched helplessly at Rancho Los Amigos as a young patient, who was on respiratory support, expired without any warning while the resident staff tried everything to save him. I watched in stunned horror as a harried young nurse repeatedly tried to ram a wheel chair bound patient in a full body cast through a doorway that was much too small!

After a few more shocking revelatons like this, I was begining to have my doubts about the safety and effectiveness of accepted medical practice.

I guess I was a little naive about the ability of modern medical science to heal the sick, but I found I was not ready to accept the methods that were current at that time. Some of them were very invasive and extremly risky. So I stayed away from the medical field, taking with me the benefits of a good basic pre-med education, and looked for alternative choices. I wanted to find someting I could do that would meet, or exceed, a basic standard I had decided upon.

"Do your best, but do no harm."

In the next few years I looked into spirtual churches, studied Transendental Meditation, and began to find out about some of the natural healers of the past such as Edgar Cayce, Daniel Palmer, and others. The thing most of these methods had in common was an absence of dangerous drug therapy and surgery, the two most common causes of accidental death in hospitals. Even the AMA admits to over 60,000 deaths every year due to these methods. Some sources place it even higher.

So, I started looking for some method that emulated the techniques and results of these great natural healers.

While visiting my sister in Florida in 1983, I attended a "spiritual" church in St. Petersberg, (near Tampa). One evening a charming lady in her sixties gave a talk about an ancient Japanese method of healing called "Reiki". Her name was Virginia Samdahl and she was the first to introduce Reiki into mainstream America.

I liked everything she was saying, it met my criteria and more. It even eliminated the "Ego" problem, because, as she said, "Once you start the Reiki..." "GETOUTOFTHEWAY!" This was a hard pill for a few of the class egotists to swallow, but it fit my model of healing to a Tee! Find something that may help, and can do no harm...this was it.

Many of my fellow classmates kept in touch after we were trained, and soon we came up with the idea of a "clinic" where we could all practice this new craft on anyone interested. It wasn't long before we had all the clients we could handle. The most amazing results were on a group of cancer patients who were currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for various cancers. Without exception they came through the treatment programs hale and hardy. No loss of hair, rosy cheeked instead of pasty, energized instead of dragging. Wewere all ecstatic!

It wasn't an "official" study, but it was obvious to us that Reiki had made a difference in the quality of life for these stricken people. Other unofficial reports came in from around the world of amazing results from the use of Reiki on a wide variety of trauma. From burns to broken bones, it seemed to help.

Before I go any farther, let me say I do believe in the use of standard medical practices...but I also believe we rely on them too much.

I believe we all need to not only help one another in time of need, we also have to take some of the responsibility for the cure.

By placing our health in the hands ofsomeone else, we have given up that responsibility.

I think it's one of the reasons alternate modalities like Reiki work.

By choosing Reiki as a treatment option, one has made a decision to participate in their own health. I believe that is as important asthe treatment itself.
