Cinco de Mayo commemorates the defeat of the French army by the Mexicans at the La Batalla de Puebla  in 1862, and is sold as Mexican Independence day. 

In fact Mexico gained its independance from Spain in 1821, and Independance day is celebrated September 16. (click here for more on

I guess Diez y Seis de Septiembre just doesn't have the same ring as Cinco de Mayo.
