Planet Earth Our Home Base
Earth makes an elliptical orbit around the sun.The journey takes one year-four seasons.Summer is hot because the sun stays above the Horizon longer.
All Year,Earth is about the same
distance from the Sun,about 93
million miles,or {150 million km.}
Constant sunlight,
The Sun never stops shining,but it lights only the half of the Earth that is facing it
That half has the day,the half that is turned away has night.If the planet were motionless,one half would always have day and the other always night.But The  Planet Earth makes one compete revolution on its Axis in 24 hours.
If Earth is the same distance from the sun all year long,then why is it cold in the winter and hot in the summer?
Its due to the fact that Earth leans on its axis as it orbits the Sun.The Axis an imaginary line connecting the North Pole to the South Pole,isnt verticle striaght up and down.it always tilts as we move throught space.
Trail of Sunlight
People say the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.You know this is not really true,because the sun dosent move,only Earth does.But as the planet rotates from west to East on its axis,the Sun does appear to move from East to West across the sky.
back to index page
Like a revolving door spinning on its center pole,Earth turns on its Axis-an imaginary line through the Earth.
As Earth turns,one half of it turns toward the sun,the other half faces away from the sun.
