Are Iguana's For You????
Those CUTE, CHEAP (Usually the iggy is $20), LITTLE Iguana in that pet store is not what most tell you they are. That baby Iguana will grow up to 6 to 7 feet in length. Can Live up to TWENTY YEARS. Need HUGE HUGE enclosures the size of a small room. Not only are the HUGE when grown, They have MANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS. YOU MUST provide UVB lighting, Special heating, humidity levels. Fresh food DAILY if not TWICE DAILY. Iguanas have LARGE powerful tails that can and do cause damage. Sharp Nails and teeth that can and do hurt. They are a carrier of Salmonella. Daily baths are needed to help there skin and keep them hydrated. You must spend time daily interacting with your iguana to help to prevent a WILD and MEAN iggy. Even the tamest, sweetest of ig's can and do still bite on occasion.   Not only do you have the added cost of the huge enclosure you will need, the daily fresh food they MUST HAVE, the equipment (climbing spots, basking bulbs, UVB bulbs, light fixtures) the added electric, heating bills, the vet bills, expected and unexpected, finding a qualified HERP VET, having to drive a distance to get to that vet. You must be able to met there special requirements every day for the rest of there life. EVEN if you decide that they are no longer "good" for you, it is VERY VERY difficult to find someone else to take on your "problem" iggy. Please think LONG AND HARD and do LOTS OF RESEARCH before giving in to that "COOL" pet, or that Cute iggy in the tank even when the store tells you a 10 gallon aquarium will work good for them, It wont. Please check  out my site and the links page to see many other sites with information that will help you decided if an Iguana is really for you, and if you do these sites will help you to give your iggy the best possible life. Please check back as I will hopefully be adding pics of bites and scratches to show how much damage that little iggy can do.
