Interview with author Dot D
How long have you been watching the show ?
I have been watching the show since the beginning. As you can probably figure out I am a died in the wool Brookie. What I have always hated is how Brooke has always been so unlucky in love. I never liked her paired with Eric and as much as I tried to like her with Thorne to me she was truly best with Ridge.
Who are your favorite characters (and what is so great/fascinating about them) ?
Of course my favorite character is Brooke. She is exciting and beautiful and spunky. She has a never say die attitude that I can admire. Though at times I cringe at her actions. She is the all time underdog, the girl with a heart of gold and the one I always root for. I also love to hate Stephanie. She is the typical wicked mother-in-law, at least to my favorite. The show would be nothing without her. Ridge is the stereotype tall, dark and handsome hero so of course I want him with my favorite heroine.
What were your favorite storylines on B&B ?
My favorite storylines had to be Barbados, when Ridge came to the rescue of his beloved Logan. I also adored the beach wedding, even though I knew that it would never bring happiness. I especially loved when Ridge recreated Nagano for Brooke, talk about sexy and steamy!!! And I loved when Brooke took her 51%!! And lets not forget the Lab Boink when Brooke invented Belief!! I guess any Brooke and Ridge scene does it for me!!
What were your motives to start writing ?
The reason I started writing is an interesting story. My mother was sick in the hospital and I was reading her Wendy's Control. She was also a big B & B fan. She really enjoyed the fan fiction and it brought her joy in her illness. As I continued to read it to her she said something to me. She told me that she knew that I could do this myself. Now I had always loved writing. I wrote stories and plays for my friends and I won several contests in school. But I had never considered writing something online for the world to see. I scoffed it off as motherly pride and continued to read her Wendy's wonderful story. Soon after that she passed away. As I started to recover from the ultimate shock of it I thought about her words. And then I decided to pay her honor and give it a try. My first couple of chapters were shorter and I didn't receive much feedback but I decided to stick with it a bit longer and I am so glad I did. I have met so many wonderful friends through my writing and posting and I feel that I have gained a confidence that I never had before. At this time I thank you all again for your everlasting support!
What are your personal writing guidelines ?
My personal writing guidelines are simple. Let the characters tell me what to do. They seem to have minds of their own. For instance Michael, he takes over my keyboard and does things that I never had intended. What I usually do is write a rough outline of what I want to cover in the current chapter and cross it off as I do. But I also get new ideas along the way.
Did you have any fascinating experiences via writing ?
I guess the most fascinating experiences that I have had is in meeting people from all over the world. It still amazes me that the net can bring so many people from so many backgrounds together!
Who were the people that influenced you personally and which writers have influenced your writing style [Danielle Steele vs. Stephen King] ?
I guess that my greatest influence was my Mother. She had faith in me when no one else did. As for writers? Well I love Stephen King the best and obviously I am NOT following in his footsteps! But I love all novels, romance, mystery, suspense, adventure, you name it!!!
How much time it takes to write a chapter, normally ?
I try to have at least one chapter a week, sometimes one of each story. I usually read and reread it many times before I post it. I try to find all spelling and grammatical errors but they do sneak in from time to time. I also send the chapter to a special friend to read for me and give he her final approval before I post!!
How do you deal with writer's block ?
Well when I have block I usually go to my other story. I rarely am blocked with both at the same time. But if I am I watch a movie or listen to music and think, think, think! Something will always seem to inspire me! I also depend on my fellow fan fic writers!! A couple of quick emails and I get my confidence back and I am back in business!!!!
How do you always find time to write ?
Well this one may get me into trouble! LOL!!! I always email my story back and forth to work and home. I write on my breaks and my lunch hours and sometimes sneak in a little extra when I am on a roll!!! I also write at home while I chat and watch TV!!! But this is for fun, it's not my job so my income doesn't depend on it. I wonder if it would be different if it did!!!
What's your advise for future writers ?
Try it! You'll like it!!! Writing fan fiction is so much fun and it gets easier with every chapter you write.
