CHAPTER 14

“Brooke, I didn’t expect to see you here.” Megan got up and greeted her friend and boss with a hug. “I’ve missed you, we all have.”
“I’ve missed everyone too.” Brooke admitted with a smile.
“Are you back to work or just visiting?” Megan appraised Brooke’s red linen suit and well-coifed hair.
“Back to work, but maybe still on a limited basis. I brought Hope down to day care, Marta is out of town for a couple of days and with Donna starting here I felt it was better than leaving her home with a baby sitter while she wasn’t in preschool.”
“They all love her here.” Megan assured her. “I have to say you’re looking wonderful.”
“I’m feeling pretty good.” Brooke assured her. “Things are starting to settle down finally.” She looked at a large stack of messages on the side of Megan’s desk. “Are those all for me?”
“I’ve tried to pass as many on to Eric or Stephanie or Thorne as possible, but a lot of people only wanted to speak to you. But some of these are personal too.” She handed Brooke the stack. “I stopped writing them down every time that he called.”
“Ridge.”
Brooke sighed. “I guess I’m going to have to deal with him. I’m ashamed to say I’ve been putting it off.”
“He seems very apologetic Brooke, are you sure you can’t fix things?” Megan wondered.
“It’s far too late for that.” Brooke explained. “Though I’d like to repair some of the damage. Ridge and I share too much history to just throw everything away. We’ve been good friends in the past, I’m not sure if we can ever get there again but I’m not going to throw the idea of it away.”
“Would you like me to schedule any meetings? Shall I hold your calls while you get settled? And can I get you anything? Coffee? Breakfast? Anything?”
“I’d love coffee, but only if you’re getting some for yourself.” Brooke told her.
“I was flirting with the idea of heading to Starbucks, that chocolate muffin is calling out to me.
“Well then by all means go get it.” Brooke laughed. She reached into her purse and pulled out her wallet. She handed Megan a twenty-dollar bill. “Get me a Caramel Macchiato and one of those blueberry things and get yourself that muffin and your coffee too. I’ll be trying to settle in. As for meetings, none today please. I’ll let you know later about my availability. I’ll take my calls but please warn me if it’s Ridge. Oh and Megan, I’m expecting a call from Sue Kendall, please put her through right away, it’s very important.”

“No! Mine! Mine!” Hope screamed as the little boy picked up her toy boat and started to play with it.
“It’s okay Hope, Bobby is just playing with it.” The teacher walked up to the two children. “Why don’t you come over with me and help with the finger-painting.” She suggested.
“It’s mine.” Hope continued to protest. “Nick! She screamed when Bobby took the small figure out of the toy boat.
“Okay honey.” She tried to calm the little girl, after all she was the CEO’s daughter. “Bobby, give Hope back her toy.”
“Hey Squirt, you know we’re supposed to share.” Rick laughed as he walked in with little Eric.
“Wick!” Hope looked up joyfully the young man and his son. Ewick!” She screamed.
“Can I play wit Hope?” Little Eric asked Rick.
“Sure you can.” He let go of his hand and the little boy ran to play with the little girl. “I guess my mother is in today.” Rick asked the teacher.
“Yes she is.” She confirmed. “Though she wasn’t sure if she’d be here all day or not. How is Eric’s cold?” She asked him.
“Just a little sniffling now. No fever or coughing.”
“Good.” She hated seeing a sick child infect a room full of healthy children but again, being one of the family who owned the company she couldn’t turn the boy away. Thankfully his parents had taken him home and kept him home during his brief illness. “Hope seems rather attached to that little boat and the little guy inside it.” She told Rick.
“That used to be mine.” He laughed. “But Hope has taken it to a whole new level. I wouldn’t try to take it from her if I were you.”
“I learned that the hard way.” She confirmed. “So is Eric here for the day?”
“Unless his Mom or my Mom comes for him, yes.” He answered. He turned to his son who was busy in deep play with Hope. “I’ll see you later big man. Take care of Hope.”

“You can move your toes on demand Nick, I want to see if you can move your feet too.” Tracy got down on her knees. She held his feet in her hands. “Just move them slightly if you can.”
“I can.” He told her. He concentrated and watched as his feet slightly curled in her grasp. “And don’t hold so tight, it tickles.” He complained.
“You’ve been holding out on me.” Tracy frowned. “What else can you do?”
“Not walk, that’s for sure. And I can’t please my woman either.” He said with a tint of disgust. “I’m not even half a man. She deserves so much more.”
“Oh shut up.” Tracy waved her hand at him. “You know that’s not true. I’ve seen it Nick, I know you’re in working order, you’re just too scared to try. I have a feeling if you did that you’d be very happy with the results. You’re improving at a rate that I didn’t expect to ever see. You’re months ahead of schedule. You’ll be walking in no time, now show me what else you can do.”
Nick looked at her with reservations. He knew she was right. He was reacting to Brooke’s touches and kisses and yes, he was afraid to try. He didn’t know what would happen if he did try and everything fell apart in the middle. Maybe she was right, maybe the time to try was now. As for his legs he was making progress but he didn’t want to get his hopes up there either. “I can’t do anything more, but I have tingles in my calves.” He reached down and rubbed them. “It sort of hurts. That’s good isn’t it?”
“It’s more than good. You’re going back to the bars right now Mister.” She got up and went to retrieve his chair.
“Why?” Nick moaned. “We were there for hours. I just want to go the pool and do that. I’m tired Tracy.”
“Do you want to walk? Do you want to make love to your girlfriend? Cause if you do you’ll do as I say, if not, well you know the routine, there are a ton of PT’s out there who will be more than willing to take your money and do nothing. I am NOT one of them. Do you really have something better to do Nick?”
Actually yes.” He answered her. “I have a job that I have to get back to if I want to keep it.”
“Oh.” She thought about it for a moment. “I had hoped to have you full time but I can understand that you need to devote some time to your work. How about we work until about two and then you go on to Marone?”
“That’s not giving me much time there.” Nick sighed.
“I’ll explain it to Mr. Marone if you’d like. Nick we’re at a point that if we stop it can slow down your recovery. I don’t think anyone wants that, least of all you.”
“He told me not to come back until I was ready. But I am ready Tracy. I’m sick to death of feeling useless. At least there I can still make a difference.” He sighed and looked down at his legs. “I guess I can live with your option, two o’clock it is. Let me call Hank.” He reached for his duffle bag and pulled a cell phone from it.
Hank your driver?” Tracy asked.
“More like a nursemaid.” Nick answered with a sulk. “But unless I can learn to drive without legs I need him.”
“You know you could Nick, there are custom made cars where the gas and breaks are controlled by your hands, but if you want my opinion it would be a waste of time and money for you. You’re going to be walking, a lot sooner than you think too. So let the guy make some money driving you around and you concentrate on getting better.”
Hmmm.” He frowned at her and punched in numbers. “You’re good at the spiel but I’m not sure I’m buying it.”
“That’s okay, because I know the score Nick.” She smiled. “Make your call and then meet me at the bars, I have to make a couple of calls and reschedule something myself.” She picked up her clipboard and bag and walked out of the gym and into the women’s locker room.

“I didn’t expect to see you back.” Stephanie walked into Brooke’s office. “You’re looking well. Apparently Mexico agreed with you. Did you have a nice vacation? A shame you weren’t able to meet up with Ridge while you were there. I’m sure you expected him to tag after you like a lost puppy.”
“You know perfectly well I wasn’t off on vacation Stephanie and you also know that I’ve been home for a while now too. And as for Ridge, well I don’t care to discuss anything about him with you.”
“A little sensitive are we?” Stephanie laughed. “Looks like you overplayed your hand, you kept him hanging too long and you ended up all alone.”
“I didn’t play anything.” Brooke assured her. “What happened with Ridge.” She suddenly stopped. “No, no you are not going to get to me. Do you have anything business related or are you just here to gloat about something that you have no clue about?”
“I just came to welcome you back.” She said with a sickeningly sweet smile. “I see you had to hire some reinforcements, now that you don’t have a Forrester at your beck and call anymore. Does she have the same talents as you Brooke?”
“I can hire anyone I want and for your information Donna is very smart and very talented.”
“Ah, does she share your er, talents in the boudoir?” Stephanie snidely asked her nemesis.
“Go away Stephanie, I’m far too busy to spend time arguing with the likes of you.”
“You won’t get him back Brooke. You blew it this time you know.”
“I don’t want him back, though if I did all I’d have to do is crook my little finger.” Brooke said with a demonstration. “In fact, if you have any influence at all on him I’d appreciate it if you asked him stop harassing everyone in my family. I’ll talk to him when I’m good and ready and right now he is low on my list of priorities. Maybe he should concentrate on his job at Marone for a change, I hear that he’s been neglecting that too.”
“Your sailor tell you that?” Stephanie asked with a twinge of anger. “How is he doing?” Her voice and face softened with the question.
The concern in the woman’s voice seemed genuine to Brooke. “He’s doing a lot better thank you.” Brooke answered truthfully. “Rehab is hard and tiring but he’s making tremendous strides. Thank you for asking.”
“He seems a good man, though what he wants with the likes of you is beyond me. You must be mighty good in bed.” She laughed.
“Oh I am.” Brooke smiled like the Cheshire Cat. “Just ask Eric why don’t you?”

“Are you comfortable; would you like a different chair? Can we move anything out of the way?” Massimo asked as he looked around Nick’s office.
“I’m fine Massimo, really.” Nick let out a contented sigh. “It’s good to be doing something well, normal. But what isn’t normal is you running around me like a mother hen. I’m okay, just let me get my feet wet again and I promise you won’t be sorry you got me back.”
“I’m already thrilled to have you back my boy.” Massimo patted him on the back. “Now I’ve asked Debbie to be available to you. Just hit 3 on the intercom and she’ll be right in for you. And you buzz me if you need me too. And I don’t want you overdoing it on your first day back either. You’ve already had a long day.”
“With that slave driver, yeah.” Nick frowned and laughed. “But I have to admit, she’s good.”
“I’ve left you some reports.” Massimo pointed to a small pile. “If you have any questions.”
“I’ll ask.” Nick stopped him. “Go on, you have more to do than baby-sit me. I’m going to be just fine.”
Massimo started to walk out then turned around. “This rug, is it in your way?”
“I got in just fine.” Nick assured him. “Go on Massimo, let me earn my salary.” He gave him a grin. “Oh and thanks. You can’t know how much I needed a place to come back to.”
He waited until Massimo left and then he picked up the phone and punched in a number.
“Brooke Logan.” The voice on the other side of the private line answered.
Hiya beautiful.” Nick’s cheerful voice answered. “What’s shakin’?”
“I hope your day is going better than mine.” She said with a laugh.
“Which one is it? Forrester? Or his mother?” He instinctively knew what would cause her distress.
“So far just her, but I expect his radar to zone in on me soon.” She sighed. “Are you on a break? Is Tracy giving you a workout?”
“I’m at Marone.” He answered. “I worked out a deal with Nurse Rached.” He laughed at his own joke.
“Nick!” Brooke gasped. “You need to stay with your rehab!”
“I am Brooke.” He sharply replied. “But I need to DO SOMETHING!”
“You’re right, but Nick you have to put your recovery first.” Brooke admonished him.
“What does she do? Coach you?” He exhaled. “You women will be the death of me.”
“We care about you Nick!”
“I promise, I am not ignoring my recovery, no one wants it more than I do!”
“Please let’s not fight. We’re on the same side.”
“You’re right.” Nick calmed down. “I’m sorry, it’s just so frustrating. I want it all to be normal again. I guess I’m too impatient. I’m glad I have you to ground me.
“I don’t want to ground you, I just don’t want you to get so frustrated.”
“I don’t mean it like you ground me from doing things, you keep me grounded, you keep me sane. You make me happy Brooke, even when I have no reason to be happy.”
“You do the same for me.” She smiled to herself. “I miss you.”
“Yeah, me too.” He answered. “Anyway, I’m going to try and get myself acclimated to stuff here again, but then I thought I’d shoot over and pick up Hope.”
“Pick up Hope?” She asked with an unseen squint.
“The munchkin wants to go fishing, I think I’d like to do a little fishing myself. Besides, I need to get some sh*t off the Marlin. I get to kill two birds with one stone.” Brooke was suspiciously silent for a few moments that seemed to linger like hours. “Hank will be there too Brooke, he won’t let her go overboard.” Nick said with disappointment.
“Oh Nick, you know I wasn’t thinking that. I was thinking that this is too much for you.”
“You’re worried about your kid, I get it Brooke. Never mind. I better go, I’ll see you later.” He put the phone down in its cradle and his head in his hands. “Useless, that’s all I’ll ever be.”

“What have I done? What should I do?” Brooke wiped a tear that threatened to spill from her eye as Donna walked in.
“What happened? What’s wrong honey?” She quickly made her way to Brooke’s side.
“I don’t want him to think I don’t trust him. I do Donna, but she’s a baby, she’s so quick that three adults with all their faculties can’t seem to keep up with her and he wants to be all alone on a boat with her. Do I have a right to be scared? Tell me the truth Donna. Do I?”
“Nick wants to take Hope out on the boat by himself?” She asked with a frown. “That doesn’t sound like him Brooke, he has a lot more sense than that. You guys have been in the house for almost three weeks now and he still won’t even go out to the deck alone with her. Are you sure he didn’t mean to bring you too?”
“Maybe he did.” Brooke surmised. “And he did say Hank would be there, but that was after I hesitated. Donna he loves Hope and she loves him. I don’t want him to think I don’t trust him. I’d trust him even if his arms didn’t work either. I trust him more than just about anyone. But she’s a handful and I really think she’s too much for him. Now how am I supposed to say it’s okay but only since he said Hank would be there? I’ve emasculated him and I never meant to.”
“I bet he’s thinking that he was wrong too Brooke. You two need to stop walking on eggshells and just be honest with each other. I know you try to spare him any pain over his injuries but honey, they are part of life, part of your reality. You have to deal with that with every decision you make, like it or not.”
“I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit.” Brooke brought her finger to her mouth and nervously started to bite on her cuticle.
“When did this all happen? This morning?” Donna wondered.
“No, he just called and suggested it and I blew it Donna. I embarrassed him needlessly and thoughtlessly.”
“Call him back and tell him that you’re sorry and just explain your reservations to him. I know he’ll understand and he’ll probably agree. And then you can let him convince you that with the two men together as long as one always has their eyes on her, that you are okay with it. You are aren’t you?” She asked.
“I am. I really am. But I already made him feel so badly. He’s going to hate me.
“Brooke!” Donna said loudly. “This is not Ridge, this is Nick. He is sensible and reasonable and he loves you so much. You said you trusted him, well have a little faith in him honey. Go on, call him back.”

“Thanks Thorne, I owe you one.” Ridge said with a grin as he spoke to his brother. “It’s about time she came back.”
“I know you’ve been looking for her forever Ridge. Just promise me that you won’t harass her okay?”
“I won’t. All I want to do is show her how much I love her and how we belong together.” Ridge assured him. “I won’t even mention that you told me she was back.”
“I don’t care if you do Ridge, just don’t make me regret that I did okay?”
“Never.” Ridge promised. “I’m going to make this work Thorne.”
“I hope so.” Thorne smiled. “And when you do maybe you can give me some advice. I seem to keep striking out with Macy.”
“You can do better Thorne.” Ridge barely got the words out. He was ashamed and sickened over what he had done.
“I love her Ridge. I know she and I have had a strange history but I really do love her. It always comes back to her, you know?”
“That doesn’t make it love.”
“I could say the same about you and Brooke.” Thorne countered.
“But you and Macy keep trying, you get married, you have no interference, no distractions and you still don’t make it. I take my own share of the blame with Brooke but you know Thorne, there has always been someone or something getting between us.”
“Like there is now?” Thorne asked.
“Popeye is a nothing. I’ll take care of that and I’ll get her back and thanks to you it will all start today.”
Like I said Ridge, just don’t make me regret telling you.”

Nick stared at the ringing phone. He knew it had to be Brooke and he didn’t know what to say to her. “Don’t do this to yourself.” He said aloud and grabbed the phone. “Payne.” He answered.
“Sounds like what I am acting like, a pain.” Brooke said with a forced laugh. “Please don’t hang up on me again.”
“I didn’t hang up ON YOU, I just hung up. I’m sorry.” Nick told her. “You’re right, I know you’re right but it doesn’t make it any easier to accept. I’ve been independent pretty much all my life Brooke and it really bothers me when someone suggests that I need to lean on someone else. But Hope comes first and I don’t want to ever put her in danger.”
“I told the teacher to let her go with you.” Brooke said softly. “But I think you’re in for a little more than you bit off. Eric is there too and when he heard Hope was going fishing he begged to go too. He’s older and a little more responsible, but he needs constant looking after too. Do you think you and Hank can handle two little ones?”
“Why don’t you join us?” Nick asked and then nervously cleared his throat.
“I’d love to but that would just give Stephanie all the ammunition she needs. We could make it another day.” She suggested.
“We can do it AGAIN another day. I don’t want to let Hope down again Brooke, I think Hank and I can handle it. As long as Eric isn’t scared to be with someone he doesn’t really know. I promise I won’t put anyone in any danger. We won’t go out far and we won’t let them get anywhere close to the edge. But if you don’t want me to take her, I’ll think of something else.”
“Go on, take her.” She said, holding back her own fear. “Just don’t stay out too late. I thought we’d grill some hamburgers tonight.”
“Fish woman, have faith, we’ll be grilling fish.” Nick laughed. Brooke was glad to hear the happiness back in his voice.
“I’ll see you later Captain. Have fun.” Brooke told him.
“We will. And next time I don’t take no for an answer from you.”
“Bye.” Brooke giggled and hung up.

“Mom, what is that?” Macy stopped Sally as she tried to hide something in her desk drawer.
“What’s what?” Sally feigned innocence.
“This.” Macy pulled open the drawer and pulled out the sketch. “This is a Forrester, I can tell. What are you doing? I thought you were going to go legit.”
“And how am I supposed to come up with an entire line with only one designer?” Sally threw up her hands. “Macy darling, knockoffs are our forte, we give the public what they want, the fabulous designs at a price people can afford. There is no shame in that.”
“The shame is in stealing.” Macy reminded her with a sharp look. “You can’t keep doing this, they’ll press charges.”
“Not against the woman that Queen Forrester’s son is in love with. Thorne will stick up for us.”
“I am NOT with Thorne Mom and even if I were, I’m not the designer here or the thief. We can’t do this. Not to Ridge.”
“Ridge? Why the sudden concern for Ridge? And how could this hurt Ridge?” Sally frowned.
“He’s an artist, a gentle soul.” Macy smiled. “Don’t you like him?”
“I did, until he abandoned us like he did. I have nothing against him Macy but if he was doing as he promised he would we wouldn’t be in this mess. He’s spending all of his time at Marone and none here and yet we still have to bow to his demands. Now tell me, why would it hurt Ridge? He and his family aren’t exactly seeing eye to eye darling.”
“Stephanie and Eric are his parents and he loves them.”
“Fine, he loves them, but why do you care about him or his family? This is our family, our company Macy and I am doing my best to survive. I’d appreciate a little support from my darling daughter. I could see if you were concerned about Thorne, but Ridge?” She looked into Macy’s eyes. “Oh don’t tell me you have a thing for Ridge.”

“I got everything you asked for.” Hank came into Nick’s office with two large sacks. “What time are we going to pick up the little girl?”
“Just give me a couple of minutes.” Nick pulled the chair back from the desk. Using the strength in his muscles he lifted himself up until he was almost standing. His hands gripped the arms of the wheelchair.
“Way to go.” Hank nodded. “You won’t be needing me much longer.”
“No offense Hank, but I’d like to see you gone today, well unless you wanted to grab a beer at Chuck’s or something.”
“You’re not ready for that yet, but I can see it coming.”
“Hello?” The man’s voice called out from the doorway. Nick lowered himself back into the chair.
“Come in.” He told him.
“Hi, you’re Nick right?” The man asked as he approached the desk. He was young, in his early thirties with blue eyes and light brown hair. He was stocky, somewhat muscular. He wore black jeans and a black tee shirt with a black leather jacket.
“I am.” Nick confirmed. “And you are?”
“Deacon, Deacon Sharpe.” He held out his hand. Nick hesitated but shook it.
“Hank, go check the soft drinks.” Nick told him. Hank knew that he had already done it but it seemed Nick wanted time alone with this man. “Take a seat.” Nick told Deacon.
“I don’t know how much Brooke might have told you about me.” Deacon started.
“A bit. But I have to wonder. Why are you here? What do you want from me?”
“I’ve heard talk, you and Brooke. Hey I think it’s great. Anything the keeps her away from Mr. Wonderful gets my vote.”
“I take it you’re not a fan of Ridge Forrester.” Nick chuckled.
“You could say that.” Deacon grinned. “So believe me, when I heard there was someone new in Brooke’s life, well it did make me happy.”
“And why is that? You aren’t involved with Brooke.”
“She um, told you about.”
“Hope.” Nick answered, sparing the man the discomfort. “Brooke also told me that when you left town you said you were staying out of Hope’s life.”
“That wasn’t what I wanted. I did it for them, Brooke and Bridget. But I miss her.”
“Brooke?” Nick asked.
“No, Hope.” Deacon reassured the man. “Brooke is a really special woman, but I caused her way too much grief. I wouldn’t ever try and complicate her life, except.”
“Hope.” Nick said again.
“Yeah, she’s something.” Deacon smiled proudly. “I f*cked up a lot in my life, but that little girl is one thing I can be proud of. I’d like to be a part of her life.”
“And you’re here because?”
“Because I thought if you and I talked, you might be willing to put in a good word for me. I swear I don’t want to cause any trouble.”
“Brooke doesn’t have to ask anyone’s permission for anything. She is a strong woman and she makes her own decisions, she doesn’t need to rely on a man.” Nick frowned. “She doesn’t answer to me or to anyone.”
“That’s not how it was. She never made a move without Ridge’s approval.”
“We don’t have that kind of relationship Deacon. Brooke can ask me my advice or opinion on anything, but I’d never even think to make a decision for her or try to influence her.”
You’re good for her.” Deacon said with a sigh. “I respect that. I do. And that’s why I’m asking you to do this. Just put in a word for me. At least ask her to talk to me? I’ll respect her decision, good or bad.”
“I think Hope deserves to know her father. I think if she doesn’t she could come to resent both of you. I don’t want that for Hope, I know how hard it is to grow up without a father and with a lot of questions. But I can’t force Brooke to do anything that she doesn’t want to do.”
“But you’d talk to her?” He asked Nick.
“I don’t know why you’d even want me to. I know I’d resent someone trying to get to me through someone else. You and Brooke may not be on the best of terms now but you share a beautiful child. I think you’d further your own cause better if you just tried to improve your relationship with Brooke. But if you really want it I’ll mention that you came to see me. I can’t make any promises. I think you and Brooke can reach some agreement if you’d give her the credit that she deserves.”
“You’re a fair man, I can tell you really care about Brooke and about Hope too. Ridge would rather have fed Hope to the lions than let me see her and I swear, that man doesn’t care about Hope unless it gets him into Brooke’s panties. I know he didn’t want anything to do with her for a long time once he knew that it was me and not Whip that was her dad. Ridge would never give me the time of day if I had tried this when they were together, you’re different and that’s good for Hope. Thanks for listening to me Nick, I’ll take your advice and I will go see Brooke, maybe she’ll see that I am trying to change.”
“Everyone deserves a second chance.” Nick assured him. “But I think Brooke is going to need some proof that you’ve changed. And there is no way in hell she’ll ever let you around Hope if you’re drinking.”
“I’ve quit. I’m AA.” Deacon promised.
“Then you tell that to Brooke. Go to her and give her your case. She’s a caring woman and I think deep down she wants Hope to know you, as long as she believes that you’re clean and sober.”
“I am.” Deacon swore. “So I’ll come by tonight, that is unless you are taking her out or something.”
“Uh, Brooke doesn’t live at the house anymore.
I’m not sure I should give you the address, not without asking her, I know she values her privacy.” Nick scratched his chin. “Why don’t you go see her at Forrester? She’s back to work again.”
“I’m not sure that they’ll let me in.” Deacon said with a sad smile. “I’ve burned a lot of bridges.”
Nick thought about it for a while. “Okay, then we’ll go back to your plan. I’ll be the go between, but only because the Forresters can be hard to deal with even if Brooke IS the CEO. But remember, you still have to sell yourself Deacon.” Nick explained. “I’ll talk to her tonight and I’ll ask her to call you. That is all I can do. I think she’ll agree to a meeting.”
“Thanks Nick.” Deacon held out his hand, which Nick took and shook. “I owe you one.” He grinned and left with Nick wondering if he had done the right thing.

“Jackie. I wasn’t expecting you.” Brooke stood and smiled as she greeted her new friend. “How did you even know I was back at work?”
“I went to the house, you weren’t there, I drove past the Marlin, your car wasn’t there, so I decided to give Forrester a try. I’m glad to see your life is getting back to normal.”
“Things have calmed down a lot.” Brooke walked from behind her desk. “We have a routine going now and since Nick hired Hank I found I had a lot of time on my hands. I figured it was time to get back to my responsibilities again.”
“I hope that it’s not too much for you.” Jackie said with concern. “I know that Nicky is a handful and you also have another child.” She added with a grin.
“Sometimes it is like dealing with two children.” Brooke admitted. “Nick is doing so well Jackie, but he’s so frustrated. I wish he would see how well he is progressing but he tends to dwell on the negative.” She walked over to Jackie. “Can I offer you anything?”
“Nothing dear, I just wanted to stop and say hello to you, and to ask you how you think Nicky is coming along. You know better than anyone. What kind of progress has he made? Have you been able to uh.” She raised her eyebrows.
“No.” Brooke shook her head. “And I think that frustrates him more than the walking. He has feeling but, well.”
“It will come.” Jackie assured her. “Even Dr. Watts says so. Nicky needs to learn some patience. But Brooke, I know this is hard on you too. I hope you haven’t. No, this is not my place.”
“I haven’t put any pressure on him.” Brooke swore. “But sometimes he makes attempts and then I. Oh God, this is so embarrassing.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“Your son is a wonderful man, he is so very deep. Most people don’t even see it but he is so deep, so strong, so loving and oh so proud. He’s also the most unselfish man I’ve ever met. Here he is the one who has all the pain and yet all he thinks about is my happiness. Sometimes I hate my past Jackie, I hate it so much.” Her hands tightened into small fists.
“But Brooke, why? Nicky doesn’t care about any of that. Why do you?”
That reputation of mine.” Brooke shook her head again. “He knows about it and I guess that he does believe it to a point. I admit, I am a sensual person. I like sex, but I certainly can go without.” She stopped and sighed. “I can’t talk about this anymore.” She told her. “It’s between the two of us.”
“Then talk to him Brooke, tell him how happy he makes you and how you care about him, him not just the physical relationship. It is difficult for him. In the past all the women, it was first and foremost about being physical. Nicky always ran when it started to go deeper. Sometimes I wonder if this accident was a blessing in disguise. He might have run from you too Brooke, but he couldn’t. And I don’t mean it as a reflection on you Brooke.”
“I think I know what you mean.” Brooke said thoughtfully. “But I don’t want Nick to stay out of a sense of obligation or because he thinks he needs my help. I love him Jackie and I want to see if we can build something together and I don’t think we can until we’re on equal footing, pardon the pun.” Brooke laughed nervously.
“You have my support and my vote Brooke. I think you’ll weather this storm together and come out even stronger.”
“What about you Jackie?” Brooke asked her.
“What about me?” The woman countered.
Massimo. Did I notice something more than thankfulness and friendship?” Brooke looked into her eyes.
“I knew Massimo, I knew him a long, long time ago. It’s because of him that Nicky has his love for the sea. I never thought I’d see him again and yet fate has once more tossed us together. I’m more than just a little interested in him and yet I’m not sure if the timing is right. The years have pushed us in very different directions. We’ve both changed, grown apart. I wonder if it’s only our memories that are attracting us to each other. I know you and Massimo have not seen things the same way, but he is a good man.”
“He is.” Brooke admitted. “But he’s stubborn and narrow minded too.”
“He does respect you.” Jackie took Brooke’s hands.
“Now.” Brooke reminded her. “Because I’m not with his son. If I were to turn back to Ridge you’d see that respect blow right out the window.”
“You, you’re not thinking of returning to him are you?” Jackie was visibly upset with the very thought.
“No.” Brooke answered with a reassuring smile. “What Ridge and I had is over, it was over before Nick and it would be over even if there never was a Nick. I was just saying that to Massimo family is everything and I am not good enough for his family.”
“That’s ridiculous!” Jackie angrily replied. “If he harbors any of those feelings, well he is just going to have to change them!”
“It doesn’t matter.” Brooke took her hand. “I’m not with Ridge, I’m not going back to him. Massimo isn’t going to do anything to me. He’s glad I’m with Nick.”
“Yes, yes but.” Jackie seemed at a loss for words.
“You can’t force someone to like or respect anyone. I can live with the relationship I have with him. He’s your friend and Nick’s employer and he has been polite to me. That’s good enough.” Brooke gave her an encouraging smile.
“No, no I have to change this.” Jackie protested.
“Brooke, have you had time to look at the…..Jackie.” Eric’s business like tone changed as he saw the woman with Brooke.
“Eric.” Jackie smiled at him.
“I didn’t realize you two knew each other.” Brooke looked from Jackie to Eric. She readily became aware of the charged air around her. These two were more than just acquaintances, Broke decided, they knew each other. There was an attraction, some kind of relationship. It made Brooke smile to see Eric look so enchanted. He had been so unhappy since he learned of Stephanie’s betrayal.
“We’ve met.” Eric smiled. “Hello Jackie, how are you?”
“I’m doing very well Eric.” She couldn’t seem to take her eyes off of him.
“I’ve meant to call you.” Eric said with an uncharacteristic blush.
“I’ve been going a little crazy since the day of our meeting.” Jackie made the excuse for him. “But now that Nicky seems on the road to recovery.”
“I’d like to see you.” Eric said quickly.
“I’d like that too.” Jackie agreed.
Eric turned to Brooke. “I’ll leave you two for your visit. Brooke, I’d like to discuss the plans for the showing before our meeting. Look over those notes I left you.” He turned back to Jackie. “Jackie, I’d love it if you’d come down to my office after you and Brooke finish. Perhaps we can make a date?”
“I’d adore that.” Jackie smiled at him. “I’ll see you shortly.”
Both women watched Eric as he left. Brooke looked at Jackie and smiled. “He’s a wonderful man.” She told her but the look was one of concern.
“He is.” Jackie looked a little nervous. “I like him Brooke.”
“He’s been through a lot Jackie. He needs all the friends he can get right now, but please don’t let him think that you’re offering more if you’re not.”
“Now who’s being protective.” Jackie smiled at Brooke.
“You and Massimo, I know you’re interested and I know how possessive he can be. He already hates Eric. I don’t know if you realize the position you’re putting them or yourself in.”
“I enjoy the company of both men Brooke. I’m not looking to marry anyone or make any long-term commitment at this point. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I don’t want to be hurt either.”
“I’m sorry.” Brooke blushed. “You’re right, this isn’t any of my business. I just care so much about Eric and about you.”
“It’s alright Brooke, we are both concerned about our loved ones. We’ve both seen a lot of hurt, but I promise you, that is not my intention. I really enjoy spending time with Eric. I think a woman should be able to see more than one man, unless it gets serious and right now nothing has become serious.”
“I guess we need to be able to keep our options open.” Brooke agreed with a grin. “But believe me, I don’t think Eric is a man you’ll want to let get away.”

“Hope and Eric will be right out Captain Payne.” The pleasant teacher told him. “Our other teacher has the children outside right now.” She couldn’t seem to stop staring. While she had expected Ms. Logan’s man to be as handsome as he was, she hadn’t expected the man to be in a wheelchair. Nick felt self conscious with her stares but out of respect to Brooke he held his tongue. “Are you um, do you have a, um.”
Nick knew her discomfort had to do with his condition. She was probably worried about the children. Nick felt that he had to put her at ease. “My assistant is outside waiting in the van.” He explained. “The kids will have plenty of supervision.” He was beginning to wonder if Brooke was right to be concerned. Was he only fooling himself?
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stare. I just didn’t expect you to be, well.” She blushed and turned away.
“I’ve gotten pretty good at getting around in this thing.” He told her.
“You don’t owe me any explanations.” She said softly.
“Nick!” Hope screamed as she and Eric were led back inside. She ran to him and took a leap, landing in his arms.
“Hi cutiepie.” He hugged her and gave her a kiss. “Are you ready to catch some fish?”
“Yes!”
She hugged him tightly. “Is Mommy coming too?”
“Not this time, she has to work but Eric is coming and Hank is coming too.”
Yay!” She said gleefully. Fishies!”
Nick called over to Eric. “You ready buddy?”
“Yes sir.”
He said shyly.
“Get over here matey.” Nick grinned at the little boy. He tapped his lap. “I got room to drive us all outta here.”
“Daddy!” Eric called out as Rick walked in.
“Hey Nick.” Rick walked over to him. “Thanks for including Eric, I know he’s very excited.”
“You can trust me Rick, he’s going to be fine.” Nick promised.
“I do trust you.” Rick assured him. “But next time I want in on the trip except maybe it’s just you and me and the deep blue sea. I’d love to go after something big.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Nick was grateful to Rick. He felt he was putting this on to ease his discomfort with the teacher and he really appreciated it.
“You guys go and have fun, but hurry back, I can already taste that fish and Mom invited us to come join you.”
“Note to self.” Nick pretended to write in the air. “Stop at seafood market on way home.”
“Hey now, you told Mom you’d be bringing home fish.”
“Don’t forget tarter sauce.” Nick added with an exaggerated exclamation point. “We’ll see. I hope so, but we’re not taking her out far, we’ll be right within the dock area and the kids are probably going to get bored pretty quickly.
“And you’re probably already dying to be home with Mom.” Rick added.
“I’m always dying to be home with her.” Nick admitted. “But I love being with my first mates too.” He tapped his lap again. “Let’s go Eric, the fish await.”
“Have a good time buddy.” Rick gave Eric a hug. “Thanks again Nick.”

“Thanks Tracy.” Brooke said with a smile. “You’re doing such a wonderful job, though I know at times it can feel thankless.”
“It’s all an act.” Tracy laughed. “I’ve rarely had a more determined patient. But he does frustrate very easily.”
“Dr. Watts seems positive.” Brooke said with hope.
“I have no doubt whatsoever that he will be walking again Brooke, maybe not as quickly as he wants but a lot quicker than he expects. It’s going to happen, it’s happening already. Right now I think you’re going to have your work cut out for you too. He’s going to be taking a lot of chances, he’s impatient. He wants to run, he’s ready to skip walking.”
“I know. He has my daughter out on the boat right now and I have to admit, I’m nervous. I trust him more than anyone, but she’s a child and she’s a handful to someone with working legs. I know he’s very reliable but still.” She stopped as she was lost in thought, and some of those thoughts weren’t happy ones.
“He won’t take chances Brooke, he’s a very considerate man, very smart and very careful.”
“And very proud too.” Brooke reminded her. “But what could I do? I couldn’t show doubt, that would be horrible for him.”
“I think you did the right thing.” Tracy assured her. “Hank is with him right?”
“Yes, and he can run after her if she starts acting up.”
“I don’t think she will. I know how much Nick adores her.”
“You do?” Brooke asked.
“He couldn’t be prouder of her if he were her father. He talks about her all the time, that is when he isn’t talking about you.” Tracy said as a smile crossed her face.
“I talk about him a lot too. Who would have thought huh?” Brooke said, more to herself than to the woman who knew nothing of her long and complicated history with the Forrester family.
“Sometimes it’s hard to move on.” Tracy sympathized. “But when it’s the right person, the old phantoms seem to fade right before your eyes. That happened to me when I met my Matt.”
“Nick DOES talk about me doesn’t he?” Brooke laughed nervously.
“I hope I’m not offending you.”
“Not at all.” Brooke told her. “It’s nice to have someone to talk about this thing with. So tell me Tracy, is there anything that I should be doing that I’m not?”
“You have great instincts. You’ve been doing just about everything perfectly. I can’t tell you how thrilled Nick was about the house. I’m happy about it too.”
“I wasn’t sure if he was really happy or if he was just trying to impress me. What did he tell you?” Brooke asked her.
“That the house makes everything so easy for his recovery. It gives him his pride without making him feel like he’s on display and, well maybe the rest should be between the two of you.”
“I love living with him too.” Brooke told her. “I didn’t know if I would. I didn’t know if I was ready, but nothing has ever felt so natural, so right.”
“Just make sure you give him space and let him make some of the decisions too. He’s growing stronger every day. He can do this Brooke, and with your help it is going to happen faster than he imagines.”
“Thank you.” Brooke felt a well of pride in her heart.
“I’m going to ask Nick to bring you in sometime this week. We’re going to make some advances in his therapy and I’d like you to be involved. Do you think you can take some time out for it?”
“There is nothing more important to me than my family.” Brooke explained. “Of course I’ll be there.”
“That’s nice to hear.” Tracy said with a smile. “Family.”
“I did say that didn’t I?” Brooke said with a giggle. “I haven’t known him long but I just can’t imagine my life without him anymore. Nick has become such an important part of my family. It’s like I’m finally in a place where I’ve always been looking for. Yes, he is my family and my daughter’s too.”
“I know how much he loves Hope. He talks about her all tie time.”
“That goes both ways.” Brooke laughed. “If you think that I’m attached, you should see my little girl. The sun rises and sets on Nick, but I guess I can take my share of the blame for that, I’m rather fond of him myself.”
“Do you have any other children?” Tracy asked her.
A look of sadness came over Brooke’s face. She looked up at Tracy. “A grown son Rick. He’s everything a mother could ever ask for.” She smiled. “Though I’m not exactly thrilled with his choice in a mate.”
“You seemed upset when I asked.” Tracy looked confused.
“I also have another daughter. I love her with all my heart, but we’re estranged. It’s a long story. She’s out of the country right now, in medical school.”
“I won’t press.” Tracy promised. “I hope you can settle your differences.”
“So do I.” Brooke agreed. “I miss her so much. I want her home. But it’s so hard. Things happened that I’m just not sure either one of us can fix.”

“It’s a lovely home.” Sue told the couple as they walked out the front door. “But it’s a large investment; I understand that you might need time. Just know that there are others who are interested in it.”
“Bob, I really think that.” The young woman started, but her husband pulled her away from the realtor. Sue smiled at them and looked down at the list. She had shown the house five times and knew that three couples were likely to make offers. Brooke wouldn’t be waiting long. She checked the time for the next couple; they would be there in about a half hour. She checked her watch again and stole a glance at the arguing pair. The woman wanted to make an offer right there and then, Sue knew that from her years of experience. The man was hesitant. It was a large commitment. Being the professional that she was she wasn’t about to interrupt them or pressure them. The house would sell itself in no time. She checked the lock on the door again and then looked over at her car.
“Ms. Kendall, we’re going to need more time.” Bob Richards announced to his wife’s chagrin. “We need to think about it, at least overnight.”
“I can’t make promises.” Sue explained.
“We understand.” Bob told her. “We’ll be in touch tomorrow. And thank you.”
Sue waved as they drove away. She wrote a couple of notes and was getting ready for the arrival of her next couple when a man walked up to her.
“What the hell is going on? Who are you?” He asked angrily. Sue looked up at him. He fit the description perfectly, she had been warned and almost expecting him. “Where is Brooke?”
“May I help you?” She feigned innocence.
“Help ME?” He was incredulous. “What is THAT supposed to mean? Do you know who I am? Do you know who’s home this is?” He walked over to the door and knocked loudly. “Brooke! Come on! Open the door!”
Sue watched him as the knocks grew harder and louder. “She’s not there.” She informed him.
“This is crazy.” Ridge pushed the doorbell again. “I know she’s home.”
“She’s not here.” Sue repeated. Brooke had warned her that Ridge would be stubborn and angry, he was both.
“And who are you? Why are you here?” He demanded.
“My name is Sue Kendall. I’m Brooke’s realtor.” She waited for the explosion. Ridge looked at her as is she had been speaking Chinese. He opened his mouth, said nothing, closed it again and then repeated the motion.
“Why are you here?” He finally managed.
“I’m showing the house.” She explained.
“What? Brooke wouldn’t sell this house, not with what it means to us. You’re crazy! This house can’t be for sale!” He insisted.
“Maybe you should talk to Brooke Mr. Forrester.”
“So you DO know who I am.” Ridge said with a strange intonation of pride.
“Mr. Forrester, I have another couple coming over to see the house. Perhaps you could speak to Ms. Logan and get your answers. I don’t want to have the prospective buyers come and see an argument.”
“The house is not for sale!” Ridge growled.
“I’m afraid that it is.” Sue said calmly. “Really, you should give her a call.” She liked and respected Brooke but she didn’t feel it was her responsibility to deal with this man.
“Brooke!” Ridge shouted loudly, pounding on the door. “Open up Logan, we need to talk; we need to talk right now!”

“I hope that the children aren’t driving Nick too crazy.” Brooke looked at Donna and laughed.
“You seem okay with it all now.” Donna commented as she put a tomato under the running water to wash. “I know you were very nervous about it before.”
“It was silly of me. I trust Nick, he’s smart and careful, and he wouldn’t take any chances.” Brooke compared two large onions. “I know everything is fine. I saw Tracy and that helped too, she’s very positive about his recovery.”
“And you need to reinforce that. Keep him upbeat about it. He’s a lucky man Brooke, even if he never does walk, he made it out alive and he’s really doing so well.”
“He will walk.” Brooke told her.
“I think so too.” Donna agreed. “I didn’t expect you home so early.” She put down the tomato. “How was it getting back to work?”
I didn’t do all that much work.” Brooke admitted. “I went over some things with Eric, did my best to avoid Stephanie after one exchange and walked around looking over my shoulder for Ridge. Oh and I had a visit from Jackie. Did you know that she knows Eric and that they are interested in each other?”
“That could be a bit sticky for you.” Donna frowned.
“Because of my past with Eric?” Brooke asked with a squint.
“Oh no honey.” Donna quickly corrected her. “No, because of the animosity you’ve had with Massimo. Things seem to be a lot calmer now and I’d hate to have him think that you are trying to push Jackie towards Eric instead. I could really see him getting angry at you.”
“You know Donna.” Brooke walked to the table and sat down. “Massimo Marone is nothing more to me right now than the employer of the man that I love. He was very good to Nick, very helpful to me and I will always appreciate that, but the connection we had before is over. I am not interested in his son and anything he felt about that has to end. As for Jackie, I like her and she is Nick’s mom and I respect her, and I want her to be happy. If that is with Massimo, fine and if it’s with Eric, well that’s fine too but I’m not going to get in the middle. I’ll support whatever Jackie wants, well as long as Nick agrees.” She added with a laugh. “But personally, I think she and Eric could make a really sweet couple.”
“Hmmm, I think your prejudice is showing.”
“Probably. But really, Massimo has been very nice to me lately so if he is what she wants.”
Anyway.” Donna said, changing the subject. “What else happened?”
“Not much. I did some work and I just wanted to get home. Work used to be all I really had, it was my lifeline, but I’m so content now that I don’t mind not being there. I never expected this.” She picked up a carrot and took a bite. “Not that I mind work either, it’s just not my be all and end all anymore, and it never should have been. Life is so different Donna.”
“I hate to even bring it up but does he know you’re back?”
“I didn’t see him, but then he doesn’t work there anymore. I imagine he’ll find out, but not from Stephanie, she’s very glad we’re not together.”
“Brooke, honey you sound bitter.” Donna was slightly concerned.
“I am Donna. Not that I want to be with him, I don’t, but why must she continue all the animosity? Haven’t we all gotten past that?” She pushed a strand of her hair back. “I don’t want to fight with him; I don’t want to be enemies. You know, Ridge and I always made good friends, maybe our mistake was always trying to take it further.”
“You loved him.” Donna reminded her.
“I did.” Brooke freely admitted. “But it wasn’t a good love, it was obsessive, it wasn’t healthy. Ridge never loved me enough.”
“And Nick?” Donna asked.
“I think he’d capture the moon and stars if I asked.” Brooke smiled and sighed. “But it’s more than that. It’s not built on fantasy. He’s honest and I’m more honest with him than I’ve even been in my life. And we have fun. We talk, we laugh, we can just sit and watch television and it’s nice. I don’t have to put on airs with him. We come from the same place. It’s comfortable, but better than just comfortable. I just wish.” She stopped and looked at Donna.
“The sex?” Donna asked.
“It was so good.” Brooke looked wistful. “It still is, that’s the amazing part. He’s so unselfish. He pleases me more with just; well let’s just say that he satisfies me. I just wish that I could, that we could. It was so damn good Donna. I dream of that night. That one lone night. It changed my life forever.”
“He’s that good huh?” Donna asked with a chuckle.
“What changed my life wasn’t just that it was good, it was that I fell in love with him. I fell in love and I haven’t looked back.”
“Then what’s wrong?” Donna asked.
“I guess I’m waiting for the bottom to fall out, it always does.”
“That’s Ridge, not Nick. Brooke you’ve finally made the break. This happiness is real, even with the obstacles you have what you have is good and real.”
“Am I moving too fast?” Brooke wondered.
“Only you and Nick can answer that, but I don’t think so.”
“Hope is so enamored with him. What if it doesn’t last? How can I do that to her?”
“You need to stop thinking worse case scenario.” Donna chastised.
“Hope asked him to marry us.” Brooke said with a tense laugh. “The scary thing is that I was hoping he’d say yes.”
“You’d marry him? Already?” Donna’s eyes widened.
“Why wait when you know it’s right?” Brooke shrugged. “Oh, I don’t know Donna. I’m not ready, he’s not ready and yet if he asked, I know my answer would be yes.”
“Do you think he will ask?” Donna wondered.
“Not until he can walk.” Brooke assured her. “And even then, I’m not sure. He’s not a man who has ever trusted women, he never had a good relationship and I’m not sure if he feels as strongly as I do.”
“You said you talk.”
“But he’s shy about emotions. I know he loves me, but marriage is such a drastic step and it’s one he’s never taken before. The one time he tried he was burned.”
“You won’t do that.” Donna encouraged her. “You won’t Brooke, it’s over with Ridge, you won’t let Nick down.”

Sue took the seat next to the attractive man and put down her briefcase. “Three offers. I should be happy.”
“But?” He asked.
“That man. I just don’t know how she ever got involved with him. He, he, grrrrrrr.” She growled and laughed. “I need to cleanse him from my thoughts. He’s not my problem.”
“She did warn you. You told me that.” He reached for his beer and took a gulp. “Don’t worry, it’s over now. All you have to look forward to is that big commission and our trip to Hawaii when you get it.”
“It was like a mantra.” She laughed. “I kept chanting under my breath, Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii.”
“Did it work?” He asked.
“Not nearly as much as this.” She leaned over and kissed him. “Thanks.”
“Oh don’t thank me, I needed it too.” He snuck a second kiss.
“Bad day too?” She asked him.
Hillerman backed out on the supplies, I had to send Ed running to get them somewhere else. But all in all we’re going to finish on time. That in itself is a miracle.” He looked towards the busy bartender and motioned him. “You want wine?” He asked.
“Would I seem terrible if I had and Apple Martini?” She blushed.
“You deserve two.” He said. “Good thing we met here instead of where I suggested.” He reached for a napkin and wiped the bar in front of her. “I don’t think you’d get one of those there.”
“Wine would have been just fine, in fact I could have gone with a cold beer too. You know I’m no snob. I’d be more than happy to spend some time with your friends.”
Ahhh, after a long day you need to relax Suz, I can throw darts, drink beer and shoot pool any day.”
“And I’m more than willing to join you.” She said.
Next time.” He winked and turned to the bartender who had just appeared. “Apple Martini for my lady.”
“Another?”
He pointed to the beer.
“Let’s live. Hell, give us some nachos too buddy.” He laughed and pushed his mug over to him. “So what did the psycho ex do?” He asked Sue.
“Let’s not talk about him, or even think about him. Let’s just have fun.” Sue told him.
“I’m with you.” He readily agreed.

“Nick, are you sure you’re okay?” Hank asked him as he gathered the children’s things together. “I don’t like the idea of going on without you.”
“I’ll be fine.” Nick assured him. “I called Tracy, she’s on her way down, she’ll ease my mind and then drive me home. You just get the kids and their fish home and tell Brooke that I needed a quick work out. But Hank, don’t worry her.”
“Yeah right, like that will happen.” Hank rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you come back with me and have Tracy come to the house?”
“Because I want to do it MY way. Now go. The kids are so tired they won’t even think about why I’m not there. Do it Hank.”
“You’re going to have a lot of explaining to do when you get home.” Hank told him with a laugh. But then he turned serious. “Are you sure you’re okay Nick? You scared me when you turned so pale before.”
“I cut out on my therapy early to work and do this. I guess I overdid it a bit. I knew I shouldn’t but I didn’t want to disappoint Hope. I’ll be fine.”
“Do me a favor, call Brooke so she doesn’t ask me ten million questions that I have no answers for.” Hank urged him.
“Okay.” Nick scratched his chin. “I’m just not sure that that won’t worry her even more. I’ll take care of it and you know I’m fine. I just want to ask Tracy some things. I promise we won’t be long, now please get those kids home.”

Hi Mom, hi Aunt Donna.” Rick came in, followed by Amber. He hugged his mother and then his aunt while Amber presented Brooke with a box of cookies and a bottle of wine.
“Are they back yet?” Amber asked.
“No, not yet.” Brooke looked at her watch. “They shouldn’t be much longer.”
“Eric was so excited.” Rick laughed. “And Hope, wow, you’d think that kid had fins herself.”
“Sort of weird if you ask me.” Amber crinkled her nose. “I know when I was her age the last thing I wanted to do was touch worms or fish. Yuck.”
“I think it’s the man who’s taking her that has Hope so excited.” Rick explained to his wife. “Nick’s a great guy and Hope is as charmed as her Mom is.” Brooke looked at her son and blushed. “Oh come on Mom, no reason to get embarrassed. Everyone can see how much you and Nick mean to each other.”
“I’ll put this wine in the cooler.” Donna picked up the bottle. “Did you make those cookies Amber?”
“Nah, but I got them at this awesome new bakery. Eric loves them.”
“So does Amber.” Rick added with a laugh.
“And you don’t?” Brooke teased. “If I remember correctly my name for you was Cookie Monster.”
“Yeah well, gotta watch those fat grams now.” Rick held in his stomach.
“Yeah right.” Amber snickered. “Can I help with anything Brooke?” She offered.
“I have hamburgers and hot dogs, Donna made potato salad and I made a green salad. I have corn to boil and hopefully they’ll have some fish too.” Brooke told her. “So I think it’s all under control.”
“How was it to get back to work?” Amber wondered.
“Tiring.” Brooke admitted. “And a little strange. I sort of feel like I don’t fit in. And it’s still odd without Ridge.”
“You should be thankful.” Donna said as she walked back in. “I turned the grill on.”
Brooke looked down at her watch again.
“It’s not that late Mom.” Rick came over and put his arm around her. “Next time you should go with them.”
“I should have.” She agreed. “But I really thought I should be at work. Oh, I meant to ask you, have you found a place yet?”
“I guess we better.” Rick smiled. “There were people at the house when I left this morning and I know more were coming.”
“I spoke to Sue this morning.” Brooke explained. “She said she had a few prospects. She doesn’t think it will be on the market long, but don’t worry, I won’t let anyone move in until you’ve found a place.”
“We’ll find a place Mom, don’t hold up the sale. I don’t want you to start getting sentimental about the house and hanging onto it. You and Nick have a great place here and you’re happy.”
“I am, happier than I’ve been in ages.” Brooke agreed. “But it is sentimental. I brought you and your sister up there, I brought Hope up there. That house has a lot of memories.”
“Bad ones.”
Both Rick and Donna said simultaneously. They looked at each other and laughed.
“Not all bad.” Brooke argued.
“Ridge built the house for you and then left you for Taylor. Sorry Brooke but there are more bad memories than good and you’re moving here was the best move you could make.” Donna insisted.
“We’re going to go out to the pool for a bit.” Rick announced. He took Amber’s hand and led her out to the deck. Brooke turned back to her sister.
“I won’t disagree, it was a good decision to move here and sell that house but there are still a lot of things I will miss.” Brooke said thoughtfully. “And someone that I miss too.” Tears filled her eyes. “Donna the last time I saw her we both were so angry, but she’s my daughter and I love her. I miss her so much.”
“Have you spoken to her?” She asked.
“No.” Brooke looked down in shame. “I guess it’s pretty selfish of me. I didn’t want to fight again. Eric’s spoken to her, she’s doing well but he thinks she’s lonely too.”
“You can reach out to her Brooke. I think what she did was horrible but you need to work it out too. Don’t let Ridge keep you and your daughter apart.”
“You’re right.” Brooke said with determination. “I’m going to call her and I’m going to see what I can do to set things right between us. She’s had time away, time to think. I bet she’s embarrassed by what happened too. I won’t hold it against her, it was Ridge who should have known better. He was the adult. She was just a confused girl.”
“Well I don’t know if I’d go that far, but your relationship with Bridget is more important than either of yours with Ridge. I bet she’ll be thrilled to hear from you.”
“Tomorrow, I am going to call her tomorrow.” Brooke smiled. “Thanks Donna, thanks for pushing me in the right direction………..again.”

“Nick?” Tracy called out as she stepped onto the Shady Marlin. “He can’t be far.” She told her husband who was right behind her. “Nick?” She called again.
“Down here!” He called out from below.
“Oh great, he’s down there.” She sighed. “I hope you’re not alone.” She called to him. “Come on Matt, let’s see what’s going on.” She led her husband down the steep stairs. “Nick? What happened?” She found him lying on the bed, the chair on the floor on it’s side. “Jeez Nick, didn’t I warn you about being places like this alone? It’s a damn good thing I had my phone on.” She walked over and righted the chair. “What happened?”
Pain.” He said. “I had the kids here, we were fishing and I got an intense pain. I pushed it away as long as I could but then I just sent Hank home with them and called you.” He looked up at the man. “And you are?”
“Matt Deveraux, Tracy’s husband.” He introduced himself. “Can I help you up?” He offered.
“Don’t move yet.” Tracy came over to Nick. “Where is the pain and describe it for me.”
“Uh, it’s here.” He pointed to his groin area. “And my thighs, man it feels like they’re burning up.”
“Okay, we’re going to try a few exercises.” She told Nick. “Matt, go on up and call the restaurant and see if we can get a reservation for a little later. I want to check this out.”
“Okay babe.” Matt told her. “Call me if you need me.” He nodded at Nick and made his way back up.
“Thanks for coming.” Nick told Tracy.
“I didn’t really have much choice.” She said with a frown. “Nick, I thought you knew better than to get stuck here alone.”
“I didn’t get stuck. Hank was with me, I sent him on home. I really needed to see you.” He pulled himself up. “This pain, damn it hurts, it really hurts and I’m scared. But something happened and I don’t get it.”
She looked at him with confusion until she saw him, with much effort, but on his own, move his leg several inches. “Well look at you.” She smiled. “Now do you believe me?” She asked him.
“Yeah.” He grinned and grimaced. “But I’m not sure what to do. It really hurts, it’s like everything is waking up.” He rubbed his thighs and let out a low moan.
“Okay, let’s get the jeans off. I’m going to give you a massage and see if we can ease some of the kinks out.”
“Talk about kinky.” He grinned and winked.
“I’m not rubbing THAT mister.” She sternly informed him, but smiled to let him know that she knew he was kidding. She knew his joking came from his nervousness. “You got yourself or Brooke for that.”
“Why is it happening like this?” He asked getting serious again. “I thought that the pain would be less but it hurts more now than it had. It hurts so bad I can barely think.”
“Okay sailor.”
She sat next to him. “I’ll work on that pain for you, but you gotta help, you gotta listen and when I say you need to stay longer and work harder you have to do it. We’re on the brink Nick and that means long, hard days. Are you with me?”
“I hear you Tracy, you’re the boss. No more arguing from me, just help me get this pain to stop, if it ever will. God what if this is my future? What if this is all I can look forward to from now on? Waking up in pain, going to sleep in pain? I can’t take it.”
“Don’t worry too much, this is a normal reaction and it’s good, you are getting better. I promise.”

“Mommy!”
Hope screamed as she ran inside. “We got fishies! We got fishies!”
Brooke smiled and held out her arms to her daughter. Hope ran to her and hugged her. “Did you have fun sweetie?” Brooke asked.
“It was da best!” Hope squealed. “I got a big fishie! Bigger den Ewick!”
“Did Nick get any?” Brooke asked. She looked up as Little Eric and Hank came in.
“Nick got two.” Eric told her. “And I got one. Hope got one too.”
“How about you Hank?” Brooke laughed and looked behind him for Nick. “Nick?”
Hank looked guilty and nervous. He handed a package to Donna. “Nick cleaned and filleted them for you.” He explained.
“Hank. Where is Nick?” Brooke grabbed his arm.
“He got tired after all the fishing.” Hank struggled.
“Is he still in the car? We need to bring him in.” Brooke frowned.
“He said something about how he cut his therapy short today so he called Tracy.”
“Oh my God!” Brooke gasped. “Something’s wrong! He’s hurt, something happened! Where is he? Where is he?”
“Come on Rick, let’s get the kids to help us get the burgers and dogs on.” Amber wanted to spare the children from whatever was wrong. Rick looked at Brooke who nodded.
“Let’s go Hope, Eric, let’s see about getting dinner started.”
“We cook our fishies!” Hope said excitedly.
“Sure, we can do that.” Rick took Hope’s hand as Amber took Eric’s. They went out on the desk leaving Brooke and Donna with Hank.
“Where is he Hank?” Donna asked. “What really happened?”
“Nothing. Honestly.” Hank swore. “I told him to call you but maybe Tracy got there right away. He just said he was sore and he wanted to see her.”
“Something doesn’t make sense.” Brooke hugged herself. “I’m going to the Marlin, I need to make sure he’s alright.”
“Brooke, he’s okay.” Hank knew Nick wanted him to reassure her.
“I know but.” Her face contorted. She didn’t know what to do. “Donna? Don’t you think I should go?”
Donna was about to answer when the phone rang. Brooke ran to it and smiled when she saw the caller ID. “Nick! What’s going on?”
“Hey beautiful.” He sounded tired. “I didn’t want you to worry. I had a little pain and I just thought I should see Tracy, I got her on her cell and she came down to the Marlin. You guys go ahead and eat, Tracy will drive me home.”
“We can wait.” Brooke offered with a sigh of relief.
“Hope and Eric were about to fade before we even docked, feed them. I’ll let you make me something when I get in. I shouldn’t be too long.”
“What happened? What hurts?” She asked.
“I’ll tell you about it later, let me just get back to it so I can get home. I gotta admit, I’m dog tired. Doing the rehab, working and taking the kids out may have been pushing it a bit.”
“It was.” Brooke said with a girlish pout. “You need to pace yourself, you want everything and you’re going to wear yourself out. Now just let Tracy check you out and get yourself home.”
“I will, I just didn’t want you to worry or to attack poor Hank.” He laughed softly. “I love you. I’ll be home soon.”
“I love you too.” She said with a smile on her face and in her voice. “Bye.” She hung up and sighed. “Well, he’s okay.”
“See.” Donna grinned. “All that worry for nothing.”
“Okay, you’re all right and I’m wrong.” She gave Donna a hug. “Let’s go get this dinner going.”

“I’m glad you called her.” Tracy told Nick. “It was stupid to make her wonder what was going on.”
“I’m not used to this relationship stuff.” He said with a sheepish grin. “But I’m learning. I think you females have some kind of club though. Where did Matt go? I could use some support.”
“He went to call the restaurant.” She answered. “I think he went for a walk, or maybe to that little dive at the marina.”
“Dive? You’re calling Chuck’s a dive? My God woman, have you no respect for the fine things in life?”
Hmmmm.” She shook her head. “You don’t take Brooke there do you?”
“I have, and she liked it.” Nick answered.
“I think she liked the man who brought her.”
That too.” Nick agreed. “So what do you think?” He asked, getting back to business.
“I think that you’re getting better Nick, I think it’s coming back and that it hurts but that it’s a good thing. So you just relax and I’ll see what I can do to ease the pain and I’ll show you some exercises that you can do yourself.”
“Okay.” He groaned as he reached and pulled off his jeans. “Do your magic.”

Jackie checked her makeup again and ran her fingers through her hair. She was giddy, giddy like a schoolgirl and nervous too. She hadn’t been this excited about a date in, well in longer than she cared to remember. “It’s just dinner.” She reminded herself, but she knew it was more. She was seeing a man that she had immediately been attracted to. Eric Forrester was like no man she had ever met and she couldn’t wait to see him again.

“Well, it’s good to see you burning the midnight oil.” Massimo smiled and stepped into Ridge’s office. He found his son engrossed in a file on his desk and something on the computer. Ridge looked up, closed the window, closed the folder and cleared his throat.
“Hello Massimo.” He answered. “I was just um, finishing this up. I need to get home to the kids.”
Of course.” Massimo acquiesced. “I’d never want to take you away from family.” He walked behind Ridge, his eyes scouring the desk. “So what were you working on? The Beijing file? Argentina? Greece? All fascinating and all very complicated right now.”
“What’s Popeye doing?” Ridge said with unhidden contempt.
“Dominick is working with the people in Mexico, as he should be. We won’t rest until those responsible are behind bars. But never you mind that anyway my son, you have enough on your own plate. So what is it that has you so captivated?” He reached for folder that Ridge held down with his hand. Massimo frowned. “There will be no secrets from me in this company Ridge. I respect you to do things on your own and make your own decisions, but I expect access to anything you’re working on.” With a tug he pulled the folder free and opened it. His frown turned deeper and his eyes glazed with anger. “What the hell is this?” He demanded.
“It’s personal.” Ridge answered. He stood and tried to retrieve the folder.
“You’re sitting here at your desk in MY company researching Brooke Logan’s activities? She’s not your fiancée anymore Ridge. She’s with Dominick and you need to accept that.”
“I’ll NEVER accept that.” Ridge said angrily. “She’s mine, she’s always been mine and she will always be mine and like it or not she is my first priority! Nothing is more important than getting her back! Nothing!”
“No, no, no. no this is NOT acceptable.”
He angrily threw the folder down on the desk. “You’re becoming a great disappointment to me Ridge, a great disappointment.” He gave Ridge one last look of disgust and walked out of the office.
Unaffected Ridge picked up the folder and started looking through it again. “He’s not what you think Logan and I’m going to prove it to you. And once I do that you’ll see that you belong with me.” He put the folder into his desk, shut down the computer and with determination, left the office.

“Where Nick?” Hope looked up at her mother with concern.
“He’ll be home soon.” She promised. “He had to see Tracy. You remember her right sweetie?”
Hope frowned in concentration and suddenly smiled broadly. “Yes!” She said. “Exerize lady.”
“That’s right.” Brooke giggled.
“Okay, she can come too.” Hope told her. “Will Nick eat dinner?” She asked.
“He’ll eat when he gets home.” Brooke answered her. “How about you? Do you want a hamburger or a hot dog?”
Hamboyger!” She shrieked loudly.
“Tone it down squirt!” Donna came over and tickled the little girl.
“Can I go to da pool with Ewick?” Hope turned and pulled at Brooke’s blouse. Pwease!”
No.” Brooke said in a stern, but kind voice. “You just got home from a day of fishing, you’re going to have dinner and then a bath and then to bed young lady.”
“Oh Mom.” Hope’s lower lip started to tremble.
“And no tears.” Brooke warned her. “Go on out and play with Eric while Rick makes the burgers.”
Yeth Mommy.” Hope turned and slowly walked out to the deck.

“That hurts!” Nick groaned as Tracy rubbed the back of his legs.
“That’s fantastic.” She laughed.
“Glad you’re into torture.” His words were laced with sarcasm.
“Think about what’s happening Nick, you’re feeling pain.”
“Uh huh.” He groaned. “And you’re liking it.”
“Of course I am. You’re feeling pain where last week you didn’t feel anything.”
“They’re still useless.” Nick turned his head to face her.
“Oh shut up.” She laughed. “This is a good thing and you know it.”

“First you call off the wedding, then you won’t answer my calls, then you take off to God knows where, now you’re dating Popeye and selling our house! You’re losing it Logan and I’m the only one who can help you. So first I’m going to make sure Popeye backs the hell off and then I am coming to you and you’ll see me, you’ll see me whether or not you like it!” Ridge muttered to himself as he pulled up at the dock. He looked over to the Shady Marlin in disgust. “Someone is home.” He said, noting the lights. “And you better not be there Brooke.” He got out of the car and walked to the boat. “It ends tonight Popeye. You’re going to leave us alone forever.”

“What are you doing?” Nick laughed as Tracy grabbed at his waist.
“I’m trying to roll you over and you’re not being cooperative at all. Now help me!” She got up on her knees and tugged at him. “Am I going to have to call Brooke and tell her that you’re going to have to stay here all night because if you don’t help me I’ll just leave you here!” She warned.
“I’m not that heavy. You can do it.” He teased.
“Oh you’re feeling a lot better aren’t you? Just remember mister, you’re not ready to get up and run yet and if you keep this up I’m going to make you wish you were. You’re making me forget I’m a professional!”
“Nag, nag, nag.” He said in a perfect imitation of Clint Eastwood.
“Come on!” She pulled at him. Nick held steady, not letting her move him. Then with a laugh he let go. She gasped as she went flying, landing on top of him. “Nick!” She chided him before they both broke out into hearty laughter.

“No. That can’t be you. Don’t fall for him Logan, don’t do it, don’t sleep with him!” Ridge felt sick as he heard the sound of a man and a woman laughing below deck. He walked to the stairs and looked down. To his shock he saw Nick and a beautiful woman with reddish hair straddling each other on his bed. Nick appeared to be naked and the woman, while dressed seemed to be enjoying herself. “You blew it this time Popeye, I knew you were only playing her. This time I got you! Checkmate.” Ridge said softly with a smile. “It’s all over now Spongebob.” And with a contented smile, he turned around and left.

Jackie jumped from the couch at the sound of the knock on the door. She didn’t want to appear over anxious but she didn’t want to wait another second either. She opened the door and greeted him with a broad smile. “Hello Eric.”
“Jackie.” He took both of her hands and then leaned in for a quick kiss. “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you.” She stood back and smiled again. “Would you like to come in for a while or?”
“We’re a little late for our reservations.” He informed her. “I’ll call from the car and tell them we’re on our way. “
Alright. Let me get my purse.” She let go of his hands, walked to the coffee table, grabbed her purse and came back to him. “I’m ready.”
“Let’s go.” He took her arm.

“Nice, I leave for a few minutes and this is what happens.” Matt teased as he came down the stairs of the boat a few moments after Ridge had left. They had barely missed each other but Matt had walked the deck and watched two fishermen while at the same time Ridge had quietly walked up the stairs and off the boat.
“She couldn’t help herself.” Nick told him. “I’m irresistible.”
“He’s a pain in the ass, that’s what he is.” Tracy struggled to a sitting position. “But it seems Nick is feeling a lot better since I reassured him that this pain was a good thing.”
“She pulling that crap on you too Nick?” Matt asked with a frown. “She set up a big old dungeon in our basement. At first I though, hmmm, kinky, but then when she got out the whips and iron maiden I had to rethink it. My wife, the sadist.”
“Cute, very cute Matt.”
Tracy pulled her hair back and reinserted it in the band that had fallen out. “I think Nick has had enough. Help him into the shower okay babe? I need to make a couple of calls and then we can take him home.”
Always eager to get rid of her patients?” Nick asked Matt. “I wonder why she comes so highly recommended.”
“Can’t be that bedside manner.” Matt joked back.
“Seriously, she’s a lifesaver.” Nick said before Matt thought he really didn’t respect her.
Cherry or mint?” Matt asked.
“Umm, cherry.” Nick joked back. “Make that Wild Cherry. But really, I thank you both for taking the time to come here tonight. I was in a lot of pain till Tracy worked it out and she took care of a lot of my fears too. You’re a lucky man Matt.”
“Don’t I know it.” Matt walked to Tracy and gave her a kiss. “Go up and make your calls. I’ll help Nick.”

Reege.” Pilar perked up as Ridge walked into the house. “You’re home.”
Yeah.” He carried his file folder to the desk, put it in a drawer and closed it. He walked to the bar and poured himself a drink.
“Did you have a good day?” She asked him.
“Better than you can imagine, except I still can’t get through to Brooke.” He walked to the couch and sat down. “How about you? Have you been reading those books I gave you?”
“I have.” She walked to the couch and sat down next to him. “But it is very difficult. I do not read English good.”
“Well.”
He corrected her.
“Well.” She repeated.
“Where is Catherine? And the kids?” He asked.
“She made dinner for the girls and then they went to a ballet show?”
“The ballet, yes, I remember.” Ridge sighed. “And Thomas?”
“He is in his room doing housework.” She smiled.
“Housework?” Ridge frowned. “Oh, you mean homework.”
Si.” She sighed. “English is hard. Very confusing.”
“You’re doing fine.” He told her. “Did he eat dinner? Did you?”
“Thomas wanted to wait for you. He said that he wanted to eat a, a, poodle?”
“A poodle?” Ridge frowned. “You got me on that one.”
Perro.” She told him.
“Dog?” Ridge asked. “A poodle is a, oh hot dogs, I told him we’d go to that hot dog place he likes so much. Damn, I just can’t do it tonight. I HAVE to find Brooke, I have to talk to her tonight.”
“Is she still not at home?” Pilar frowned. “And Neek?”
“She’s not with Nick.” Ridge said with an evil laugh. “Your pal is going to find himself out on his ass Pilar.”
“What happen?” She asked him.
“Don’t you worry about it, you just keep reading those books and watching those tapes and soon you’ll be just what he wants.” He smiled and thought to himself, ‘unless he’s already moved on to the hot little redhead.’

“Thanks Tracy! It was nice to meet you Matt.” Brooke waved as the couple walked back to their car. She shut the door and came up behind Nick’s chair. “You hungry?” She asked.
“Starved.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her onto his lap. Their lips met in a frenzied kiss. “Hungry for this.” Nick mumbled, not taking his lips off of Brooke’s.
Mmmmm.” She moaned and ran her fingers through his still wet hair. “I missed you.” She whispered, pulling her mouth free.
“I’m beat. Let’s go to bed early okay.” He said with a smile.
“The kids are still up and we have a house full of, oh, oh.” She gasped as her hand fell onto his lap. She encountered a noticeable reaction. “Does this mean?”
“I’m not sure, but I’m ready to give it a test drive.” He whispered into her ear.
“Oh my.” Brooke flushed and kissed him again. “All these people.”
“It’s okay, we have time, I’m not going anywhere. I may be tired but this gives me incentive to stay awake right?” He gently touched her face. “Did you eat?” He asked.
“You can’t show me what you just did and then go to some mundane think like food.” She gave him a playful punch on the thigh.
“Keep that up and it may not work.” Nick joked.
“Please don’t say that.” Brooke looked crushed.
“Sorry.” He smiled and squeezed her hand. “I’m just anxious to see, but nervous too. I hope I don’t let you down. Just don’t expect too much okay.”
“I won’t put any pressure on you, I promise.” She smiled and touched his cheek as he had hers. “I love you.” She said softly.
“Then feed me woman.” He said with a hearty laugh. “I’ll tell you a funny story while we eat, oh, and I have to talk to you about something but I’ll wait till we’re alone.”
“Good or bad?” She asked with a squint.
“Hmmm. Not sure, but important, I think.” He told her.
“Nick!” Hope screamed as she ran in and jumped onto his lap with her mother.
“Hope be careful!” Brooke warned her.
“Okay. Everybody off!” Nick told them. “I am hungry and I need to get me to that table.” Brooke lifted Hope up and then got up herself. “Did you cook the fish?” Nick asked.
“Hope and Eric wanted hamburgers.” Brooke answered him.
“And you?” Nick raised his eyebrows.
“I wanted to wait for you.” She said with a shyness that melted Nick’s heart.
“What will I do with you?” He shook his head.
“Anything you want.” She said with a naughty grin.

It had come to him like a brainstorm. Megan was gone, Brooke was gone, he could find her number and where she was staying and once he had it she couldn’t turn him away. Ridge was very pleased with himself as he walked down the familiar halls of Forrester. He was also feeling slightly nostalgic. He missed working with Eric and with Brooke, he missed designing. He missed being the star. At Marone he was barely a member of the team and with Popeye back it was even worse. “Maybe Brooke can convince me to come back.” He said aloud with a smile. “I’ll make her beg a bit though.” He arrived at Brooke’s office. “Okay Brooke, the time has come.” His grin soon faded when he found her office door locked. “Damn it!” He slammed his fist against the door in aggravation, then he made his way to Megan’s desk. He sat down and tried her top drawer, but that too was locked. “No!” He growled and then suddenly had a light bulb moment. He still had a master key on his own chain. He knew it wouldn’t work on Brooke’s office or on any of the executive suites, but it would work on the assistant’s desk. “Sorry Megan, but this is more important than your privacy.” He pulled out his keys and said a silent prayer that the locks hadn’t been changed. The key slid into the lock and Ridge held his breath as he turned it. The drawer slid open. “Bingo!” He laughed. “Tonight Brooke, we talk tonight.”

“The fish was awesome.” Donna put down her fork and looked at Nick. He and Brooke seemed lost in each other’s eyes, oblivious to anyone or anything else. “Earth to Nick. Hello!” Donna knocked on the table.
“Sorry.” Nick smiled at Brooke and looked up at Donna. “I think the credit goes to the cook.”
“Yes.
Rick did a wonderful job.” Brooke agreed.
“Like either of you even noticed the fish or anything else.” Donna laughed. “I think it’s time for me to follow the lead of Rick and Amber and get myself out of here.”
“Donna, you don’t have to leave so, ouch!” Brooke turned to Nick, who had just pinched her and gave him a playful frown.
“I’m going, I’m going.” Donna got up and walked over to Nick and gave him a hug. “Don’t wear her out sailor; she has a busy day tomorrow.”
“Donna!” Brooke blushed and looked down.
“Don’t pretend to be shy with me Brooke.” Donna teased. “I know you way too well. Come on, walk me out.”
“I’ll be right back.” Brooke kissed Nick.
“I’ll clear the table.” He let her go and started gathering the plates and utensils.
Brooke and Donna walked to the door. “Did something change?” Donna asked. “Is that why he was late?”
“I think so, I mean, maybe.” Brooke took her sister’s hand and squeezed it. “Do I seem shallow or slutty? Because first and foremost this is great because it means Nick is getting better.”
“You don’t look shallow or slutty or anything Brooke, you look like a woman in love.” Donna gave her another hug.
“I am. And nothing is going to ruin tonight, even if things don’t happen yet, tonight is going to be a night full of love for both of us.” She looked back and watched Nick wheeling himself into the kitchen. “I love him Donna, I love him more than I’ve even loved anyone in my life. He’s shown me what it’s like to never have to wonder, never have to fear that you’ll be thrown away at any moment. He’s shown me what love between two true partners is all about and I, I.”
“You love him.” Donna knew what Brooke meant. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks.” The man got out of the taxi and turned towards the water. There it was, dark and quiet, but it was there. “The Shady Marlin.” He said to himself. “Don’t look like you’re living in the lap of luxury. Mama must not be working it as well as she did before, but then she may be getting a bit long in the tooth. We shall see won’t we? But it’s not time for you to meet your dear old Daddy again, yet. But soon Nick, soon. I know where to find you now.”

Brooke smiled as she watched Nick start the dishwasher. “Thanks.” She came up behind him and put her arms around his neck and kissed him. “Want coffee?” She asked.
“All I want is you.” He turned his head so that their lips met. The kiss was electric.
“Hope is still awake.” She forced herself to end the kiss.
“Okay then, we can have some coffee.” He smiled. “So I didn’t tell you about what happened with Tracy.” He wheeled over to the table.
“You were in a lot of pain?” She asked him as she scooped coffee.
“I guess I overdid it a bit.” Nick admitted. “And I was tired. I was hurting and a little worried. I didn’t want to scare the kids so I figured if I saw Tracy I could put my mind at ease and maybe she could tell me what to do. So anyway after Hank left with the kids I made my way down below and waited.”
“I would have come to you too.” Brooke poured water from the dispenser into the pot.
“I know, but I thought I could handle it, and I did.” Nick answered. “So Tracy came and she thinks that things are improving and that the pain was a good thing.”
“Because you can feel things you didn’t feel before.” Brooke nodded. “But as good as that is it didn’t mean that you weren’t hurting.”
“And she agreed. So she helped me with some exercises and she massaged my legs and it really started feeling better. Honestly, she had eased my fears and the pain was really better and you know me, I couldn’t resist a little fun. So I was being a little bad.”
“Oh you were were you?” Brooke smiled. “Did you give her a hard time again?”
“You know me too well.” Nick laughed.

“It’s time Logan, it’s time. You’re not going to deny me this time.” Ridge punched in the last number.

“I sure do.” Brooke giggled. “Hold that thought.” She turned to the ringing phone. “That’s Megan, I wonder why she’s still at work.” She said as she picked up the phone. “Megan, what’s wrong?”
“It’s not Megan and don’t hang up.” Ridge told her.
“Ridge.” She sighed. “Now isn’t a good time.”
“It hasn’t been a good time for you for months. We need to talk Logan. I’d prefer it in person but if this is all I can have for now it will do. Please.”
“You’re right.” Brooke’s response surprised him. “I’ve been putting this off for too long. I think it’s time we talked, but not tonight. Maybe we can meet tomorrow. I’m back at work as you obviously know so why don’t you come to Forrester.”
“We can fix things Logan, now that you’re calm again we can fix it. All I ever wanted was to be together. We got sidetracked but from now on I promise, we will be together now. No more Bridget, no more Popeye, just you and me and our future.”
“I don’t want you coming to see me with the wrong idea Ridge.” She sat down on a stool. “Our lives have taken different paths.”
“We can change that, we will change that.” Ridge argued.
“Even if I wanted to, it’s too late.”
“It’s never too late.”
“And I don’t want to Ridge. I’m happy, I’m really happy.”
“No, not with him Logan. You don’t even know him!”
“I know him.” She stated. “And I love him. I’m sorry Ridge but what happened was probably for the best. You’d have never stayed or been happy and I was living in a fantasy. I’m not anymore. I am finally in a good relationship. I love Nick, I trust Nick and he makes me happy.”
“Trust him? Ha!”
“I don’t want to fight with you Ridge. I don’t want to be your enemy either. So if you want to meet me tomorrow give me a call at the office and we can talk.”
“Wait!” He shouted. “There’s something you don’t know.”
“What is it Ridge.” She sighed.
“You don’t know this guy Brooke. You can’t trust him.”
Enough Ridge.”
He’s cheating on you Logan! I saw him, I saw him tonight!”
“Now I know you’re lying. He’s with me Ridge.”
“But he wasn’t before was he?” Ridge asked.
“Uh, no, but.”
“He was on his tugboat Brooke. I went there to talk to him, but he wasn’t alone.”
“Of course not.” Brooke started to explain.
“He was in bed with a woman Brooke. I saw them, he was naked and she was straddling him and he was moaning out and Brooke? Brooke?”

Brooke put the phone into the cradle and turned to Nick. “He’ll never stop. He’ll never stop pushing and lying and.” She stopped as the tears ran down her cheeks.
“Come here.” Nick held his arms open and Brooke ran to them and fell into his embrace. “Shhhhh, it’s okay, it’s okay.” He tried to reassure her. They both turned at the shrill sound of the phone ringing again. “Ignore him.” Nick told her. He kissed her cheek and ran the back of his hand over her cheek. “Ignore him.”
“He’s so angry. I thought we could put it behind us but we can’t Nick. He just lies and lies.”
“He was talking about me right?” Nick asked.
“He must have seen you and Tracy. He was trying to convince me that you were sleeping with her.”
“You didn’t buy into that did you?” Nick frowned.
“Of course not.” She hugged him tightly. “But he was being so hateful. I was trying Nick, I was really trying.”
“Maybe it’s too soon.”
“Maybe it will always be too soon. Maybe the damage just can’t be repaired.” She let go of the tight embrace and took his hand. “Were you naked?” She asked.
“When?” Nick looked up at her in confusion.
“With Tracy.” She answered.
“No. I was down to my shorts, but that’s about it. What’s this about? Brooke you know that what happens with Tracy is professional, even though I like her and we’ve become friends.”
“He said he saw you on the Marlin and you were naked and moaning and she was straddling you.”
“I was in my shorts, I had done a LOT of moaning, but you know that.” He told her. “And as for the straddling, well yeah, he may have seen that. But then if he did, he must have seen Matt too or else just missed him.”
Now I’m lost.” Brooke turned as the phone started to ring again.
Tracy was trying to turn me over, trying to get me to roll. She had been doing the back of my legs, but I was feeling better and just got in the mood to tease her and give her a hard time, so I resisted it. Then when she pulled real hard I let go and she ended up on top of me. We were laughing and she was scolding me in that way only Tracy can and a little while later Matt came back and started in about how the minute he turns his back yada yada yada, but he was laughing, he knew it was innocent, well that she was. I’m sure she told him about my sense of humor. Brooke you don’t think we did anything do you?”
“No. I just wondered what it was that Ridge saw. I’m not doubting you, or Tracy.”
“I don’t want to see that insecure Brooke come back.” He looked her in the eyes. “You have to know what you and I have. I’m committed to you, I love you. I don’t want any other woman.”
“I’m committed to you too.” She said softly. “I’m not insecure about you Nick, I just wanted to know everything so he has no power over me. I don’t like other women seeing you naked but she’s a professional and I’m sure there are times that she or Dr. Watts will see you that way.”
“Tracy has seen just about all of me Brooke, she touches and helps me, but all of that, it’s like you said, it’s professional. Maybe I’m too much of a flirt. I was teasing her and maybe it was wrong.”
“No.” Brooke touched his lips with her finger. “It wasn’t wrong. It was part of what makes you the funny, kind, loving, silly man that I fell in love with. I have no fears, no doubts. None.”
“I bet he thinks he got through to you.”
“He’s probably doing the happy dance.” Brooke smiled.
“Planning your wedding.” Nick added.
“Hiring the band.”
“Looking at tuxedos.”
“Seating charts, he’s doing the seating charts.”
“Hmmm, planning the honeymoon.” Nick winked.
“Booking the hotel, reserving the jet.”
Picking the perfect room.” Nick said. “Planning the honeymoon night.”
Changing the sheets.” Brooke giggled.
“Buying the condoms.” Nick chuckled.
“Telling the press we’re back.” Brooke continued.
“Screw the press.” Nick frowned.
“Screw them all.” Brooke leaned in and kissed him. “You are so good for me Nick, so very good.”

“She’s upset. She knew I was right. She’s going to break it off with him. Tomorrow she’ll be crying in my arms and then she’ll realize that she’s where she always belonged. I’ve got her back, I just know it!” He smiled and started putting the things on Megan’s desk back in their places. “Now I have to deal with Macy, before she screws me up.”

Brooke tiptoed into Hope’s room while Nick waited at the door. “She’s asleep.” Brooke turned around and whispered to him. She adjusted the blanket and leaned over and kissed her forehead. “Sweet dreams pumpkin.” She then tiptoed back out and shut the door. Sooooooo?” She said suggestively.
“No promises.” Nick said softly.
“As long as I’m with you I’m happy.” Brooke walked ahead of Nick towards their bedroom. “Are you coming Captain?”
“I’m right behind you.” He said as he wheeled himself into the room after her. “Hey look!” He said as he pulled the chair up onto it’s two back wheels. “I can do a wheelie!”
“You’ll end up breaking both your legs and your arms too.” She scolded him. “So stop it.”
“Yes Mom.” He laughed.
“I’m going to do things to you that a Mom would never do so you better lose that name.” She giggled.
“Good God woman, I’m not sure I can handle you.”
“Oh yes you can.” Brooke pulled back the comforter and adjusted the pillows. “I’m going to go into the bathroom and freshen up.” She told him. She was feeling as nervous as a bride. She wanted tonight to be perfect. She wanted to please Nick and she didn’t want to put on any pressure. It was a hard tightrope to walk. Earlier she had hung a teddy on the bathroom door. It was sexy and feminine, a soft peach color. She brushed her teeth and splashed water on her face and then undressed. She examined her body in the mirror. “Not bad for an old broad.” She turned to the side.
“Are you coming out?” Nick called to her.
“Just a minute.” She called back. She slipped the teddy on and gave herself a spritz of perfume. She fluffed her hair, shut off the light and opened the door. Nick had lit several candles and the room had a romantic glow. He was waiting for her on the bed draped with a sheet over his obviously nude body. . Brooke gasped and then smiled. “Hello handsome.”
Hi beautiful.” Nick responded. “You leave me breathless.” He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“I don’t know why I feel so nervous.” Brooke walked closer to him.
“Confession time.” Nick smiled. “Me too.”
We have nothing to be scared about.” Brooke sat down next to Nick on the bed.
“If it doesn’t happen.” Nick started.
“Then it doesn’t happen.” She smiled. “It will in time if not today.”
“It’s almost like it was a dream, our night I mean.” Nick clarified.
“Doesn’t it seem odd to you that we only had that one night? I feel we’ve been together for a lifetime.”
“Bored already?” He teased.
“I meant that in a good way.” Brooke pouted.
“I know, I’m just trying to cover my own nerves with jokes, bad habit.” He took her hand. “Come here.” He pulled her into his arms. “You were too far away.”
“I can never get close enough.” She said in a whisper. “Never.”
Nick lowered himself over her, claiming her mouth with his. The kiss was deep and sensual. There was nothing shy about it as Brooke’s tongue danced with his. “I love this thing.” He ran his fingers down the front of her teddy. “So sexy, so silky, so enticing. Just like the woman wearing it.”
“Teddy, it’s a teddy.” Brooke shuddered as she felt his hardness against her, straining towards her womanhood.
“Barely there.” He lowered his mouth to her breast and took her nipple, still sheathed with the teddy inside his mouth. Brooke moaned as he grew harder. She felt him against her, pushing harder. He was seeking her and if she were naked he would be inside her. She wanted to remove the offensive material giving him entrance but she didn’t want to move and break the contact either.
“Nick, Nick.” She arched herself tighter against him. She could barely concentrate; her world was suddenly just senses and colors. Her body shuddered when his hand slipped between them, teasing her most sensitive place. “Nick, I’m, I’m.” She threw her head back as a wave overtook her.
“Let me take you there.” His mouth then claimed hers again as he held her close to him with one arm and continued his manipulations with his free hand. Brooke moaned and cooed and pushed herself tighter and closer to him. She wanted release and at the same time she wanted it never to end. The combination of his pen*s and fingers was more than she could take.
Oh God yes.” Brooke screamed as she hit her climax. Her body convulsed against his as Nick slowed the pace with his fingers, not wanting a abrupt end.
“You were coming before I even touched you.” He kissed her neck.
“You were so close, almost inside me.” She moaned. “Oh Nick please, we need to try.”
“I think maybe.” He kissed her and eased his hand away. Brooke let out a sad sigh when he moved to a more upright position, separating their bodies.
“Don’t go.” She pleaded.
“Just taking care of this.” He lowered the straps of the teddy, baring her beasts. He couldn’t help himself. He lowered his mouth to them once more, taking one and then the other, licking, kissing, biting and teasing. Brooke twisted and turned, trying to push the rest of the teddy off. “Careful, you’ll rip it.” Nick warned.
“Don’t care, just want it off.” She muttered.
“Let me.” He pulled it down lower, his hand once more resting on her heated center. “You’re so wet.” He smiled.
“You did that.” She pulled her legs together, trapping his hand.
“Hmmm, you like that huh?”
“Yes, on Nick so nice.” She closed her eyes as he slid the teddy off with this other hand and continued to tease her.
“I hate to ruin this but I think we have some technical problems.” Nick eased his hand away.
Brooke opened her eyes and looked down, he was still very hard and very ready. She reached over and stroked him. “Doesn’t look that way to me.” She purred. It felt so good to touch him and hold him and not have him push her away. “Like silk, you feel like a silky rock.”
Odd combination.” Nick laughed.
“I need you inside me.” Brooke circled him with her fingers. “Tell me that isn’t what you want.”
“It is.” He agreed. “But here comes the technical part. I can’t. uh.”
“Yes you can.” She insisted as he grew harder in her grasp.
“Brooke I’ll lose it right here if you keep that up.” He warned her. “It’s been a long time.”
“Okay.” She reluctantly let go. “But you can Nick, we need to at least try.”
“What I was saying is that I can’t move, you know. My legs, I can’t do the things that I would do. I think maybe we need to change positions. You need to take control.”
“Oh.” She smiled when she finally understood. “But will my weight hurt you?”
“No.” He laughed. He rolled off of her and onto his back. “In the mood for a ride lady?” He teased her.
“There’s nothing else I want more.” She got to her knees and was about to climb onto him when the shrill sound of a cry stopped them.
Mommmmmmmmmmmy! Mommmmmmmmmmmmmmmy!” Hope screamed.
“Hope.” Brooke looked at Nick.
“Go to her, probably just a bad dream.”
Some timing.” Brooke got off the bed and grabbed the robe off the hook on the back of the door. “You wait right there!” She warned Nick.

“Dad?” Thomas stood at Ridge’s bedroom door. “Can I come in?”
“Sure Thomas.” Ridge smiled. Every day he seemed more and more like his mother. Ridge pictured her smile and a wave of sadness came over him. “What’s wrong son?” He asked.
“I was just wondering.” Thomas sat down on the bed.
“Oh you were?” Ridge laughed. “About what?”
“When you and Brooke were going to get married.”
Thomas started. “You were worried because you weren’t sure if we were okay about it.”
“And you reassured me that you were.” Ridge touched his son’s knee. “I was so happy when you and the girls told Brooke you wanted her to marry me.”
“Yeah but Dad, I’m kinda glad that you didn’t get married.”
“You miss your mom, I know son.”
“Yeah but it’s not that, it’s her Dad.”
“Brooke?” Ridge frowned. It was hard enough work to get Brooke back on the same page, but now if he had to worry about the kids again he didn’t know what he would do. “You all like Brooke and she loves you guys.”
“Not really.”
Thomas looked down. “But it’s okay right, since you didn’t get married.” He looked hopefully at Ridge. “I mean you don’t even have to work with her anymore now that you work with Grandpa Mojo.”
“Thomas, just because the wedding didn’t happen as planned doesn’t mean that it’s not going to happen. I love Brooke.”
Thomas looked disappointed. “But I thought maybe cause you have that Pilar lady here.”
Pilar is just a friend.” Ridge reminded him of their prior conversation. “Won’t you be happy to have Brooke back here?”
“No.” Thomas pouted.
“Thomas, what brought this on?” Ridge asked with concern. “Have you been talking to your grandmother again?”
“She says Brooke is a whore.” Thomas looked up. “And Mom did too.”
“Your mother and Brooke weren’t best friends son, but she never said that about Brooke. You have to believe me on this one.”
“But she did Dad and we don’t want her here and Grandma said that we have to tell you that. Dad, please we don’t want Brooke to be our mother.”
“Don’t you want me to be married again Thomas? I miss your mother but I’m lonely too.”
“Can’t you marry someone like Mom, or Aunt Macy?” Thomas asked, causing Ridge’s jaw to drop in stunned silence.

“Nick, are you decent?” Brooke asked through the closed door.
“Well, no one has ever accused me of that, but I got my shorts on if that’s what you mean.” He answered.
“Nick!” Hope ran in as Brooke opened the door.
“What happened Munchkin? Bad dream?” He asked as he pulled her into his arms.
“The bad bird.” She answered.
“She was going on and on about it.” Brooke explained. “She mentioned you but I didn’t understand. What does she mean?”
“It’s my fault.” He said with a sheepish look. “I’m an old salt Brooke and I’m not used to behaving when I’m out on the Marlin.”
Brooke frowned, no closer to understanding than before.
“And the bad bird did a bad thing to Nick.” Hope told Brooke.
“That’s what she keeps telling me.” Brooke looked to him for help. “Help me out, what is this about a bad bird?”
“A gull decided my head was the perfect place to um, do it’s business.” Nick explained.
Brooke looked from Hope to Nick and started to giggle.
“It wasn’t funny.” Nick complained. “And I let out a string of expletives.”
“So you blamed the poor gull?” Brooke was laughing stronger than before.
“He shit on my head!” Nick shouted, immediately regretting his choice of words again. “Don’t listen to me Hope.” Nick told the child. “I said a naughty word.”
“Again.”
She giggled.
“I’m sorry Brooke.” Nick looked sick as he apologized. “I guess I’m not as good at this as I thought.”
“You’re wonderful at it.” Brooke watched at how safe and secure Hope looked in Nick’s protective arms. She didn’t know how it was possible but she loved him even more than she had minutes ago.
“So what did the bird do in your dream Hope?” Nick asked the child.
“It whoosh, it whoosh and it grab you and take you away and I hate it!” Hope clutched him.
“I’m not going to let that dirty old bird take me anywhere Hope.” He assured her. “Besides, I’m bigger than he is.”
Yeth.” She relaxed and put her thumb in her mouth. “I sleep here with you.” She announced.
Brooke sighed and looked at Nick. “We can put her back to bed when she falls asleep.” She whispered.
“I’ll worry that I scarred her for life.” Nick shook his head. “We have plenty of time for ourselves, we can spare tonight for Hope.”
“You’re right.” Brooke reluctantly agreed. “Maybe I should go take a cold shower.” She suggested as a joke, but part of her thought it might be a good idea.
“She’s already asleep.” Nick smiled and kissed the child’s cheek. “I need to talk to you about something anyway.” He said in a serious tone.
“Oh God.” Brooke moaned. “I hate this. I hate when this happens.”
“I’m not Ridge.” He reminded her. “Come here, I have an arm to spare for you.” Brooke got onto the bed and Nick cradled her in his other arm. “Never in a million years would I have expected to find myself in a situation like this. In bed with a sexy woman and suddenly holding her and her child.”
“I’m sorry Nick.” Brooke apologized again.
“And loving it, reveling in it.” Nick added in a tone that was almost angry.
“When I was going to marry Ridge I loved him Nick, I loved him so much, but I had one reservation. I should never have agreed to the marriage while I still had it but he was very persuasive. He made me believe in my head even when I knew in my heart it was an act. You see Ridge finally had accepted Hope, but he didn’t love her. I don’t even know if he liked her. Probably not. He resented her. All he saw when he looked at her was Deacon. I knew it. He was cold to me about that too. I know it wasn’t my shining moment but still. Anyway, I just think he never saw Hope as good enough. It wasn’t very visible. Most people would think he was good to her. Maybe he was, but it wasn’t enough. All my life I waited for him and I was willing to sacrifice my daughter’s happiness for my own. I’m so ashamed.” Her eyes filled with tears. “How could anyone resent someone as special as Hope? And Nick, I’m not saying that you do, I know you don’t. But I know you didn’t sign on for a woman and a child. I know you probably regret getting involved and I swear I won’t hold you to anything you don’t want. I’m so sorry Nick, so very sorry.”
“What the hell are you talking about Brooke?” Nick was angry and loud. “Are you blind? Are you?” He pulled her roughly to face him. “Don’t you understand me at all? I am as in love with this little girl as I am with her mother! I don’t give a crap who her father is. I am grateful to him for helping create this angel. Damn it Brooke, you’ve got to start giving me credit! You’ve got to stop comparing me to Ridge! I love you! I love Hope and I am not going anywhere! Shit!” He said in a louder voice. “It’s too soon, I am not ready for this.”
“I won’t force you to do anything.” She sobbed softly. “I’m sorry. I know it’s soon, I just wanted it to, no, no more pressure. You go if you want to Nick. I will never beg another man, no matter how much I want to. You take your time and if you decide you want me, I’ll be here Nick, but I will never force you to stay against your will.”
No, no that isn’t what I’m saying. This time it was my fault.” He shook his head. “That came out wrong, it wasn’t what I meant to say. What I mean is that I am not physically ready. I wanted to wait, I wanted to walk, I wanted to be able to get down on my knee for you, but I can’t damn it! So this is going to have to do.” He pulled her hand to his mouth and kissed it. “I don’t have a ring, I don’t have anything but my love for you and for Hope. Marry me Brooke, I know it’s sudden and you’re not expecting this but I love you and I don’t want to ever spend another moment of my life without you so please, say you’ll be my wife. We might not think we’re ready, but we are Brooke, I know I want this. I wanted to wait until I was whole again but you make me whole, you make me feel like I can do anything. Marry me, you won’t regret it.”
Brooke’s eyes widened in shock. Her mouth fell open as Nick waited for an answer. Finally she found her voice. “Yes.” She whispered. “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.” Tears, but this time happy tears, rolled down her cheeks as she held him tightly and kissed him.
“Are we going to marry him Mommy?” A sleepy Hope opened her eyes and looked at her mother.
“You bet we are Hope, you bet we are.” Brooke pulled Hope into the embrace as Nick kissed Brooke, then Hope and then Brooke again.

“Would you like to come in for coffee? Brandy? Anything?” Jackie asked Eric. She was reluctant to let the night end. They had gone to dinner and dancing and taken a long walk on the beach. Eric had taken her to an ice cream stand and they’d eaten cones and kissed like teenagers. She had felt so young, so free and so happy.
“As much as I’d like to it’s late and I have an early meeting. Can I have a raincheck?” He smiled and took her hands.
“Of course you can.” She grinned. “It is late isn’t it? Funny, I’m not tired, I’m just exhilarated.”
“I’d like to see you tomorrow.” Eric watched for her reaction.
“I’d like that too, but it will have to be late. I have a dinner meeting with some people from Fenmore’s who are coming in from Genoa City.”
“What if I rent some movies and we just stay in and watch them.”
“I’ll get a nice bottle of wine.” She was glowing.
“Sounds delightful.” He took her into his arms and kissed her. “Until tomorrow.”
“Yes.
Tomorrow.” She smiled and put the key into the lock. “Goodnight Eric.” She went inside and leaned against the door grinning. “What a wonderful man.” She told herself.

Thomas’s words were haunting Ridge. He had tried to sleep but given up. The movie on HBO couldn’t hold his attention either. He was tired and frustrated. He had called Brooke several more times but she hadn’t picked up. He vowed to meet her at Forrester in the morning and he knew he had to get some sleep so he could be on his best foot. But what about Thomas and the girls? Were they that unhappy with the thought of Brooke? He had pressed but Thomas had refused to delve further into it. “Mother.” Ridge growled. Why was she still trying to poison the children against Brooke? Why couldn’t she just let him be happy? He had loved Taylor, he would never deny that, and he knew that their marriage had greatly pleased his mother, but Taylor was dead and Ridge wasn’t and life had to go on. Brooke was going to have to work hard to win his children over. But she would, he had faith in her. He lay back on the comfortable couch and closed his eyes. Maybe he could just fall asleep here. “Yeah and maybe the moon is made of cheese.” He muttered with sarcasm. “Brooke!” He was excited at the sound of the doorbell. Only Brooke would come over this late. She had returned to him.

Brooke cuddled tighter into Nick’s arms and snuck a kiss. “This is so nice. I’m so happy.”
Me too.” Nick ran his finger down her arm. “Are you cold?” He asked when she seemed to shiver.
“No, just turned on by your touch.” She admitted. “I’m not cold since you made me put on pj’s.” She giggled.
“Better for me that way. You’re too irresistible naked.” He chuckled. “And Hope needed us tonight; besides, it is kind of nice being here with both my girls.”
“I like it too.” She sighed and let out a yawn.
“Are you tired?” He asked with another soft kiss.
“A little, but I don’t want to fall asleep, I’m afraid I’ll wake up and this will all be a dream.”
“We’ll get a ring tomorrow, then you’ll always know it’s real. But Brooke, I want to wait to get married until.”
“Until you can walk.” She supplied. “We can if you want but Nick, I love you and I’m happy right now.”
“Nothing wrong with a nice engagement, it’ll give people more time to buy us lots of presents.” He teased.
“Do you want a fancy wedding? We could just elope.” Brooke suggested.
“My mother would KILL me.” Nick laughed. “And I have a feeling that if she didn’t Donna would.”
“Okay, eloping is out. How about a nice private ceremony just for our closest friends and family?”
“That would work.” Nick agreed. “I can’t wait to meet your other sister and your parents and your brother.”
“They’ll love you, just like I do.” Brooke smiled at him.
“I don’t want to spoil the mood but I really need to talk to you. I made a promise.”
“A promise? To who?” Brooke asked with a squint.
“I had a visitor today.”
“Not Ridge.” She frowned.
“Deacon Sharpe.” He told her.
“Deacon? What did he want?” Brooke frowned again.
“He wanted me to put in a good word for him. He said he’s cleaned up his act and he wants a role in Hope’s life. Now before you say no, hear me out.”
“Deacon is a part of my life that I’ve had to work so hard to atone for. Bridget still hasn’t really forgiven me, not that I blame her.”
“Let’s not be painting her innocent Brooke, not after what happened with Forrester.”
“It was a time in my life I made so many mistakes.” Brooke sighed.
“But look at the wonderful result.” Nick looked over at the sleeping child. “She’s a little angel Brooke, you really can’t tell me you’d change anything if it meant you wouldn’t have Hope now would you?”
“No. No I couldn’t ever say that. But Deacon?”
He’s her father Brooke. Hope has a right to know her father.”
“How did he know about you? About us?” Brooke asked Nick.
“I guess we’re news. Just wait till we tell them about tonight.” Nick laughed. “Anyway Brooke, he seemed sincere. I told him it was your call, that I’d tell you what he said but that I had no say in this.”
“But you do. You’re going to be her father and I respect your opinion Nick. And we’re a team. If I say yes will you be there too?” She asked.
“Where else would I be?” He asked with a kiss. “Her father, well, step dad, Deacon is her father and I don’t believe that I should cut him out, even if you’re not sure about it yet. But wow, I really do get to be her dad don’t I? And with Deacon, I think we can give him a chance.”
“I can’t let him take her, we have to be there too.”
“Agreed. Until you know you can trust him I think he’d agree too.”
“If this had been Ridge it would be so hard.” Brooke relaxed in his arms. “Why does everything seem so easy with you?”
“Cause I’m an easy kinda guy.” He laughed.
“You’re the best guy.” She said with a smile. “All my life I’ve been searching so hard. Thank you Nick, thank you for coming into my life and showing me that all I had to do was open my eyes.”
“Thank you for being my anchor Brooke, you’ve given me a home, and I don’t mean just this house.”
“It’s the first time in so long that I really felt at home too.” Brooke agreed.
“I love you Brooke.” He pulled her tight against him.
“I love you too.”

Ridge’s eyes filled with anger as he opened the door. “What are YOU doing here?” He growled.
