Illustration of How Image Maps Work

image map

An Image Map is merely a graphic representation of information which the viewer can then click on to navigate to other sections of a web site.

The example on this page allows the viewer a graphic illustration of 4 sections of the web site - Media Speeches, Speakers' Bureau, Speech Writing, and Conducting of Meetings.

Drag the mouse over any of the figures on the banner above. You will see that if you click on one of the figures, you will link to the corresponding information.

Some of the figures takes you to a different page, and other figures take you to a different part of this page.

Media Speeches: Our clubs help us learn to speak impromptu and critically, as well as to make a presentation in the name of an organization. In these cases, we must make sure that our words are not misunderstood or misquoted. So, speeches to media must be read after careful writing. We must avoid the temptation to speak freely when we are representing an organization because we may not be presenting our own view points.

(As you can see, the image itself can be anything appropriate to the subject matter and the viewer. The coding can then reflect the section of the image you want to serve as a hot spot for the link. Since the image can be any size you want, you can approximate the dimensions of the hot spot easily. Free shareware utilities exist to assist you in coding the dimensions of the hot spot . The hot spot can be either a rectangle, a circle, or a polygon. Look under Software Required, Image Map Creator of the Main Page of this series for the most common utility.

I mapped the dimensions of this image by hand. I knew that the image was 400 by 150 pixels. I knew where I placed the figures. The math to determine the upper left x/y coordinates and the lower right x/y coordinates of each figure was simple.)

Speakers' Bureau: The most rewarding and most realistic speeches are presented in front of an unfriendly audience. The club environment is too forgiving. If we are to develop as public speakers, we must be able to face unpredictable and unattentive audience.

(The section or page to which the hot spot on the image will link the viewer can be anywhere on the internet or on your web site. It can be a page you created or a page someone else created and you find useful for the viewer. This simple mapping of an image into a series of hot spots for links can allow you to be very creative and refreshing on your approach to developing communications skills.)
