MUNICIPALITY OF MINA |
The barrio was founded through the efforts of Kapitan Antonio Poblacion known as Kapitan Roa who banded together and persuaded a group of families to settle down on the chosen site reportedly owned by a certain Kapitan Patricio Ubalde, or Kapitan Ato. To attract settlers, Kapitan Roa offered to give free home-lots to those who decide to settle there. Families attracted by such offer, flocked to the site and became the first barrio residents.
A Civil Decree issued by General La Torre in 1870 lawfully created the civil town of Montogawe. The decree provided that the residents of the are of the newly founded town should build a church, a municipal building and a schoolhouse. The church was built through the conceited efforts of Kapitan Antonio Poblacion, the local and Spanish officials, and the residents.
Montogawe was elevated to a parish in 1872 but no parish priest was assigned. The Spanish Government has forgotten or overlooked the conditions of the 1870 Civil Decree of General La Torre. So, on July 30, 1873 it issued another decree declaring Montogawe a parish.
Montogawe’s name was changed to Mina in honor of a Spanish lawyer with the same name, who represented Montogawe in a jurisdiction case over a barangay (Tolarucan) being claimed by two adjacent municipalities, Janiuay and Pototan. The court decision granted Montogawe’s jurisdiction over the Barangay.
Tricycle is the commonly used vehicle en route from the barangays to the poblacion.

Agriculture
The municipality of Mina is predominantly a slopey area of which 8%, comprises the agricultural town. The Department of Agriculture survey indicates that 2,572 has. are agricultural lands utilized for crop production. As of 1994, ricelands alone cover around 2,430 hectares of which 1,654 has. are irrigated and 776 hectares are rainfed. The remaining lands are planted with corn, sugarcane, fruits, bamboo, vegetables, mongo and other agricultural crops. The Suage River Irrigation System is the major source of irrigation water.
In 1994, the average gross production per hectare of rice was 3.7 metric ton for irrigated and 3.5 metric tons for rainfed. The reduction yield for calendar year 1994 was attributed to typhoons and a long dry spell. As to cropping intensity, irrigated lands had 2-3 croppings per year, while the rainfed areas only had 1-2 croppings that same year. Mongo and other legumes were planted instead of rice during summer seasons.
