BRIEF HISTORY

How the town to be called "Lemery" is a matter that is yet to be settled. There are different stories and version , more of legend than the facts, each version having its own number of adherents and supporters each claiming to be real of the town's name.

One version is "Lemery" was a corrupt word derive from the spanish  word "Lamenaria", the luminescent lamp. It is referred to avery tall tress, a Palo Maria, a variety of Lawaan spacie, which grows at the outskirts of the now Poblacion. To the settlers it was called  the "Labog kahoy" and was the landmark of the dull lamp when seen from afar. How "Lamenaria" metamorphosed into "lemery" is claimed to have  arisen from the natives proctivity  to adopt a simplified, shortened version for a multipsyllabic  foreign word. Thus, "Laminaria" wast shortened "Lamiri" and finally was called "Lemery.

Another version, still gaining claim by many  and is still gaining adherents, is also based on that tree landmark, the tall palo-Maria. It was said , that during the Spanish era, settlements were usually named in honor  of the saints. Relative to that  tall Palo-Maria tree which was serve as the permanent landmark  of a thriving community at a tall hill "Pitik-Pitik", the settlements was "El Pueblo de la Maria", name as the neighboring settlement which became the Municipality of Sara was once been called "El Pueblo de San Juan". Later it was  the arrival of the Americans, its slang language influenced and changed Luminaria to "Lemery" and later  it was called "Lemery".

The area which represent the Municipality Of Lemery, was once been a part of the Municipality of Sara. It became an Independent municipality in 1984, virtue of republic act 197, sponsored then representative of the 5th congressional  district of Iloilo, the Honorable Juan V. Borra.

A fifth class municipality, lemery is relatively depressed agricultural town in the northern  part of the Province of Iloilo, its link to the northern coastal traffic is a sand and gravel that extends to the opposite direction to the Municipality of San Rafael, then to Passi and the central traffic.

Lemery's economic  growth depends mainly on each agricultural sector. It posses a vast and rich area best suited for agricultural. Industrialization  post a good potential considering that it has biggest bulk deposits of white clay, for ceramics industry, as well as traces of copper, iron, gold, and other metallic minerals.
