5. James Isaic SPANGLER b. 10 Sep 1842, Virginia, m. 10 Jan 1867, in Batesville, Independence Co., Arkansas, Mary Ellen DATON, b. Mar 1848, Tennessee.  James died 9 Nov 1902, Clarksville, Red River County, Texas.  Notes for JAMES ISAIC (ISAAC) SPANGLER:

James Isaac Spangler  served in the 38th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He was sworn into to the CSA Army at Sulphur Rock, Independence County, Arkansas on August 6, 1862. This unit consisted of 1700 men from Lawrence, Randolph, and Independence Counties. In July 26, 1861 Jacob Spangler(brother ?) a Twenty-five years old Private enlisted at Camp Shaver with the 7th Shaver's Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA. In B Company there was a W.L. Spangler who enlisted on July 19, 1862 in Lawrence County, Arkansas and deserted July 1863 at Delhi, Louisiana. There was also a J. Spangler who enlisted in Company K  of this unit on August 7, 1862 at Sulphur Rock. Colonel Shaver organized the unit and was elected Colonel. In the Fall of 1864 at reorganization, he was again elected Colonel. On that same day he was elected Colonel of a different unit, the 27th. Gen Kirby Smith consolidated the two units and they were thereafter known "Shaver's Infantry Regiment" until the surrender in June, 1865.  All companies were combined on September 21, 1862 and assigned to Shaver's Brigade, Hindman's Division on January-February, 1863.They were reassigned to Tappan's Brigade under Major General Sterling Price in April, 1863.  The unit participated in the major battles in the Trans-Mississippi Department after June 1862. Some of the battles were Prairie Grove, Mansfield, Jackson's Ferry, Poison Springs, Marki Mills, and all the battles incident to Dick Taylor's Red River Campaign against General Banks. They fought at the battle of Little Rock on September 10, 1863.  At the evacuation of Little Rock in September, 1863, he was the commander of the retreat south out of the city. They retreated with Price into Southwest Arkansas where the unit fought throughout the Camden Campaign and at Jenkin's Ferry on April 30, 1864. They remained in service until the surrender with Major-General Smith's Command on May 26, 1865.   1870 Arkansas Census indicates that James Isaac Spangler could not read or write.

James Spangler arrived in Red River County, Texas  between November, 1890 and November, 1895. He apparently died there in 1902 and is buried in unknown location. It is possible that he and his wife are buried in an unmarked grave.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
