In the 1860 Alabama census for Cherokee county there is a person named John Spangler born in 1838 living in his household. There are several other Spanglers living in various parts of the state, but the relationship among them is unknown.  Scott County located in Virginia is where Gideon was living in the 1820, 1830, and 1940 censuses. Scott County is located in the northwest part of the state. This area is a triangular shape point of land bordered on the top by Kentucky and on the bottom by Tennessee.  It is bordered within Virgina by the counties of Lee, Wise, Russell, and Washington. Other counties close by are Dickerson, Buchanan, Tazewell, Smyth, and Grayson. Scott County is very close to Tennessee. It was formed on 24 November 1814 from Lee, Russell, and Washington counties. Lee was formed in 1792 and Wise in 1856. Scott County is on the path of western and southern migration from Virginia and the East. Daniel Boone had blazed the trail through by Big Moccasin Gap along an older Indian trail to Kentucky. This path became known as the Wilderness Road. In 1720 first settlers entered the Scout County area. Scott county was named after General Winfield Scott, a native of Virginia who achieved some fame in the War of 1812. He would later command an Army in the Mexican War.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
