This site is devoted to the problem of aginut - women in chains. Agunot are Orthodox women who cannot be set free to marry because the whereabouts of their husbands are unknown, or because their husbands refuse to grant them a get (a writ of Jewish divorce).
There are husbands who hold their wives captives for years, even decades, refusing to give them a get. Many husbands do this just to be cruel. Others do it in order to extort money and property from the women who wish to divorce them.
The recalcitrant husbands are often aided and abetted by the Rabbinical Courts who all too often look at any woman who wants a divorce as a "homewrecker", even if she has been the victim of abuse.
