it is soft,
it is weak.
When the heart is alone,
it has no defenses,
no protections,
no strengths.
When the heart is alone,
and it's attacked,
all it does is suffer
and feel pain.
The more pain,
the more suffering,
the harder it scars
and those scars form a shell.
But that shell is no proof
against more pain,
it is only a shield
against tenderness, kindness, and love.
That is why we can't leave the shell.
Why we must beat against it,
shatter it every time it tries to grow.
I can't stop the pain and the scars,
I can't stop the shell from growing,
but I can break it open,
and hopefully one day
love will find it's way in
and then my heart won't be alone,
for it will have someone to draw on
for strenth, support, and protection,
because two hearts are stronger than one.
That's why I open my heart
and leave it bare to the world.
