The birds you are about to see may not be as colourful as in other parts of the world but they make up by the singing quality we hear in the country side. They are used for hybrids and mules and give some lovely birds that look and sound nice. There are also some nice mutations about now.

The Chaffinch. Size 15 cm.Males grey crown:pink breast and cheeks:brown back:black wings with two white bars. Hens much like the male but breast and cheeks are cream and crown is brown. They mostly eat seeds, berries and some insects more when they have young. They will have two broods if there is plenty of food. They lay in April-May, and incubation is much like canaries.
The Greenfinch. It was very common not long ago but is not seen as much now days.In certain parts it can still be seen on the garden bird table and is one of the most agressive . When breeding it will drive the females to nest.when the young hatch out it is best to give live food for a few days if possible this seems to help them going light. To keep them fit and with wieght Sunflower and Perrilla seed does them good. The male is a nice Olive colour with Yellow feathers on it's wings. The female is more brown and without the yellow.
