It was a small crowd. If they had guns, you'd be worried. but instead, they were armed with Soap Opera Update magazines. They were DAYS OF OUR LIVES' fans standing in the express line of a grocery store check-out, comparing notes not about the price of turkey, corn flakes or asparagus, but instead the disussion revolved around one subject - their favorite couple, Jack and Jennifer. They were annoying those people behind them in line, but they didn't care. They had to discuss the upcoming pregnancy of Jennifer Deveraux and Melissa Reeves. It's that very pregnancy that is keeping you from seeing Jack and Jennifer right now on screen, and the show's executive producer Ken Corday explains why. "Missy Brennan was due June 14, and we had shows planned for her to tapee untill the sixth of June, because we felt that taping eight days before was being planned a long stint of the shows with Arleen Sorkin, where Jennifer takes a job working with Calliope on a cable TV show." But you aren't seeing those scenes. "The fly in the oitment," Ken reveals, "was on May 21; Missy came to me and said, "Ken, my doctoer just moved mydue date from the 14th to the 7th." Dramatic pause. "I could have the baby tomorrow." Insert panic from the executive producer. What that meant was less scenes from Jennifer, but there's good news for DAYS OF OUR LIVES' fans, as Melissa's July 18 return to taping includes scenes had not been written at press time, Corday predicts that Jack and Jennifer's bundle of joy will arrive, "sometime around Labor Day." In the meantime, Jack will be kept busy. "He's taken on an assignment to make more money for appropriate living quarters for their child. What we are trying to do is character rebuild," Ken confides, "and establish this character's integrity and prove Jack's own stock in himself. He tightens his belt and decides
to be a good husband. Acting as a TV station roving reporter with the police, Jack will get into a few sticky situations." Sort of like GERALDO "Sort of like COPS meets GERALDO," Ken details. "this is at the same time that Bo and Roman are in the good forum for Jack to work in." Of course what the people who were looking for Jack and Jennifer info at the check-out want to know from this magazine, whether they'er reading it at home or standing in line right now, is what life will be like for Jack and Jennifer once their story heats up again. Will we see a ner conflict between them? "We are not going to be playing conflict between Jack and Jennifer," Ken promises."This is a couple that we are not going to split up. Since the time they got married a year ago, they've had enough conflict for a lifetime. First there was Hawk, and then Jack running around a meat locker, and then Jack thinking that he was dying... Instead, with the birth of this child, will be a reunification of Jack and Jennifer. We'll see Jennifer as a working mother, who can raise a child and hold down a job, while Jack gets a whole new lease on his career."
Corday points out that he knows that the audience loves the humorous aspect of this couple, not to the point of being camp - like Eugene and Calliope - but they like the comedy aspect. If it is written comically, it doesn't work. If it is written more middle of the road, and then the actors bring their talent to it, it seems to have a much beter appeal. "They also love that Jennifer is a Horton, and she's the girl next door that everyone would love to know. She is a very honest character - honest with the audience, and honest so much with her husband that when he isn't capable of saying "I love you" she can say it to him. She completes the emotional circle that he isn't even able to fulfill. But by the end of the summer and the beginng of fall, we will see that Jack and Jennifer are both equal partners in their relationship." So until then, DAYS viewers will just have to wait for the birth of the baby. But before we conclude, Ken gives a few hints about that special day. "It will bring Jennifer's story full circle. Jennifer's father Bill delivered Jennifer in a barnyard on a kitchen table, and as Jack brings Jennifer back to salem, their odyssey will be very similar. because she will not be able to travel by air, and it is very possible that they might cross paths with not only Bill , but Jennifer's mother Laura too." We can Hardly wait! Now let the person in line behind you. go ahead. They only have one item.
