The pop superstar, whose singing career was derailed after allegations of child abuse, has been investing heavily in South Africa and his latest purchase there is a hotel and resort long known for its gambling and prostitution. Jackson and a partner, Don Barden, are paying $67 million for 27 percent ownership of Sun International. The company owns the notorious resort Sun City which "was built in what was an 'independent' black homeland under apartheid to cater for whites wishing to gamble or consort with black prostitutes, activities then illegal in South Africa proper," according to a report on the investment carried in the Irish Times. With the abolition of apartheid, the resort has been trying to reinvent itself as a family getaway - not entirely successfully and there were recently widespread layoffs.
Nevertheless, Sun City - where Jackson has performed
- is said to be one of his favorite resorts and he wants to continue making
it a family-oriented get away. When he showed up for recent financial discussions,
however, it was noted that he had more bodyguards than most African presidents.
