O N D O N, Sept. 22 — Diana Ross now says she was treated very nicely. But that’s
not the tune the pop diva was singing earlier at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Ross was hauled off a Concorde luxury jet in tears by London police today after
an altercation with a security officer who Ross claimed touched the superstar’s
breast. Ross then allegedly touched the guard’s breast, exclaiming “How do you
like it?” The singer, known widely as a tempestuous perfectionist, then stormed
off to the VIP lounge, telling reporters: “I’m absolutely furious. Do you know
when they search you, they actually touch your breast? It’s disgraceful. “They
wouldn’t touch a man’s penis, would they?” she said, according to Reuters. High-Profile
Problem Ross had apparently set off a metal detector’s alarm when she was pulled
over for the frisk. “Occasionally high-profile celebrities take offense at having
to comply with the same procedure as other passengers and it would appear that
this has been the case,” said a spokesman for airport operators BAA Heathrow.
Leaving the VIP lounge, Ross made her way into the airplane but was confronted
by police after the security guard summoned them over the alleged assault. Takeoff
for the other tony passengers, including Brunei’s royal family, was delayed
about 20 minutes. Ross, 55, was taken to the Heathrow police station where the
security guard was also believed to have been taken. There, they apparently
were encouraged to make amends. Really Nice The singer was released about five
hours later, surrounded by a phalanx of about a half-dozen police officers as
she confronted a group of about 40 reporters and camera operators. Police said
Ross had been cautioned but not charged. “The people here have been wonderful.
Everyone’s been really nice,” she said. She left in a dark green Range Rover
sports utility vehicle, and planned to leave later on an unidentified American
Airlines flight. She had been on a business trip in Britain recording a video
for one of the tracks off her soon-to-be-released album “Every Day is a New
Day”. ABCNEWS’ Lucrezia Cuen in London and Claudine Weinbrenn at Heathrow contributed
to this report.
