Disavowed
(The Bunny Caper)

Surprised by an out of the blue gesture,
it motioned to me from across the lawn,
using your intonation as its tool,
during one of those haphazard moments,
a disavowal of reality.

The proceeding conversation's topic,
a poor bunny masacred on that day.
I looked up with surprise, as you intoned,
"That's what rabbits do." (in the hare's defense)
At that moment, you were dissimilar.

Funny that I hadn't noticed before,
the goofy grin plastered across my face.
I had always seen the hunter in you,
gatherer of your own time and trophies
in the corner with teeth bared and howling.

How rare that one simply spoken sentence
brought years of preconception to it's knees,
broke apart an illusionary shell,
to bare a brief treasure from underneath
the depths of which demands a second glance.
