Alone
She looked out into the distance. The sweet smell of Autumn's cool winds blew in her face, blowing whisps of her long brown hair across her face. The orange, pinks and purples of the setting sun lit the west horizon. She smiled as she looked up into the tree above her. The browns, reds and golds of autumn decorated the branches. A single deep red leaf fell, landing in her out stretched hand.
She had come so far and decided this was the spot. and decided to rest for a while. She unrolled her sleeping bag. Sitting on top of it, she pulled out a half eaten Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich, and her cell phone to see if she got reception. Seeing that there was none, she laid down, propping herself up with one had so she could look up at the sky, finishing her sandwich. She quickly glanced at her watch.
"Six hours, Ange." she looked to her left and saw her black German Shepard - Husky mixed dog. She was curled into a ball. She laughed, "I guess you've got the right idea."
She pulled Ange into her sleeping bag and closed her eyes, letting the sound of Ange's breathing lull her to sleep, while the world outside went on.
Two hours later, she woke up to Ange licking her fingers. The scent of peanut butter lingered on her fingers.
"Ange, you woke me up." She petted her dog, and put the leash down. " I guess you can wander some." Ange was a well trained dog, she knew not the wander more than a few feet away from her owner.
While Ange sniffed around, her owner pulled out a flashlight, along with a notebook and pen. She began to write on a blank, clean sheet of paper.
" October 20 - It's shortly after sunset. Angel and I have reached our destination. It's so beautiful out here. Clean, cool air. The lake at sunset was amazing. The way the sky clashed into the mountain tops and reflected in the length of the water... Breath taking. Tonight we will sleep under the stars. There's a comet shower tonight, so I think it will be an amazing sight. Tomorrow I'll take some pictures so I can put them in my journal. I'll be on my way home in a day or two." She started to close her journal, but for got to end it, "I'll write later - Dinah"
Dinah spent the next four hours setting up her little camp. She dusted off her sleeping bag and moved it closer to the tree she was next to when she saw the sunset. She used her flashlight to help her find some wood to make a fire. She had Ange tag along for the hunt. When she finished finding the wood and started the fire, it was close to the time the comet shower would begin. She got Ange some dinner and then sat down next to her dog.
"I like it out here, Ange. It's so wonderful. Beautiful really." She laid down on her sleeping bag and looked up at the sky. Thousands of stars dusted the blanket of black in the atmosphere. One shot across the sky. She closed her eyes and held her breath. After making her wish, she opened her eyes and looked bacl to the sky. She pulled out her camcorder to get some of of the stars on tape. She smiled as another star ran across the sky.
Dinah watche the night sky for two more hours as her dog, Ange, snored her way to sleep. She woke up the next morning before the sun came up. She sat out on a rock, about twenty feet away from her camp. She had her camera out, ready for the sunrise. Within fifteen minutes, the sun began to rise. The same yellows, orenges, pinks and purples came to life, the same way they died the night before. Clouds painted the sky and all the heavens above reflected in the lake down below the hilltop she was on. She got out her journal and wrote:
"October 21 - Daybreak. As the song reminds me 'Dawn is a feeling, a beautiful ceiling, the smell of grass just makes you pass into a dream...' This view is breath taking. This is truly a once in a lifetime expierence. Angel is fast asleep - amazing for my dog, really. I think today we'll head down to the lake for a swim or to skip rocks. I'll tell you maore about it later. - Dinah."
She closed her journal and stood up. She heard a chirpping of a bird, which made her stop. Up in a pine tree, she saw a beautiful red - chested bird. She took three pictures and noted in her journal to find out what kind of bird it was.
"Ange!" She yelled and the dog looked up. She got up streaching and yawning - sticking her pink tongue out as she did so. Ange trotted over to Dinah, sitting down next to her. "Go for a walk?" she asked and Ange waged her tail in delight. "I'll take that as a yes." Dinah laughed, taking off down the hill.
