GM T56 Disassembly
Tools:
Small and Large snap ring pliers, 1/2" socker, 15mm socket, T40 Torx bit, a rubber and a regular hammer, flat blade screwdriverand a punch.

Using your punch, hammer the roll pins out of these pieces. You can slide the socket for the shifter (pic.1) off the shaft but you won't be able to remove other 2 parts (pic.2). These parts are on the same shaft.

Using the 1/2" socket remove the bolts holding the tail housing on. Use the flatblade screwdriver to seperate the housings. There are 3 slots where the two housings meet for a screwdriver blade. Pic. 3 and 4 shows the shafts after the tail housing is removed.

After the tail housing is removed, use the snap ring pliers to remove the snap rings on the tail shaft and slide the gears off. Take off everything you can get to including the roll pin on the smaller shaft and clutch fork. Pic. 6 shows the parts taken off the tail shaft (sorry for the bad lighting).

The front with the clutch fork removed. Remove the bolts holding the cover on.

Use the rubber hammer to loosen the front cover. Once loose, pull it off. Pic. 9 shows the front of trans. with the input shaft still in place (It's not very visible). Pic.10 is the inside of the front cover. That shiny ring is from bearing failure.

Pic. 10 is after the input shaft has been removed. Just rotate the shaft a little and it will come off. Pic.11 is the input shaft standing upright. The failed bearing is on the bottom of the shaft.

Remove these two bolts (pic. 12) with the T40 Torx bit. These hold the shift forks in place. Now slide the top shaft (pic.13) assembly and clutch forks out. They will come out together. The other shaft assembly and clutch fork (pic. 14) will come out next.
