THE TUNE WEAVERS MEET THE BLENDS -
(Official CD #OF - CD 6015)

Released by Denmark's Official Label in 2000, this CD compiles the work of 2 groups who originally recorded for The Casa Grande label, out of Woburn, Massachusetts. Regrettably, this package has NO liner notes.

The Tune Weavers were originally Margo Sylvia (lead), her brother Gilbert Lopez (tenor), her husband John Sylvia (bass) and Charlotte Davis (obbligato), who all came from the Boston area. The group was originally called the Tone Weavers, but at an early personal appearance the master of ceremonies erroneously introduced them as the "Tune Weavers," and the name stuck. They began recording for Casa Grande in 1957, and had big success with their debut recording Happy Happy Birthday Baby - the tune got so big that Casa Grande turned it over to Leonard and Phil Chess for national distribution on their Checker subsidiary. Regrettably, follow-up recordings, though of equal quality, never really hit the big time.

In 1958, Charlotte left the group and was replaced by tenor William Norris. The group broke up in 1962. In 1988, Margo recorded a few sides for the Classic Artists label under the "Tune Weavers" name, singing all four parts herself.

Regrettably, I have been unable to learn very much about the Blends. According to Robert Ferlingere's A Discography of Rhythm & Blues and Rock N Roll Vocal Groups, 1945 - 1965 (Fourth Edition, 2002), the group was also known as the Fabulous Blends. Group members were John Lee (lead), Stan Fishers (tenor), Berry Fishers (tenor), Larry Coleman (bass) and (allegedly) Marsha Raskin. The group's photo shows no female member, nor is a female voice apparent in the recordings. They cut nine sides (three unreleased) for Casa Grande in 1960 and 1961, which will have to "speak for themselves" in this compilation.

Worth getting.
