"LOST" VOCAL GROUP HARMONY PERFORMANCES
Aficionados of vocal group harmony (VGH) in its various forms are finding more and more selections available almost daily as compact discs appear with reissues of performances recorded over the past 70 years or so. The original sources for these CDs include phonograph records originally sold to the public, V-Discs intended for use only by the military, and "transcriptions" originally available only to radio stations. What they have in common is that all of these sources consist almost solely of recordings of songs designed to be selected and played individually.
A source that has been pretty much ignored is the great number of "live" VGH radio performances integrated into many of the comedy and variety shows during radio's "golden age" - the 1930s through the mid-1950s. Most often, a 30-minute broadcast might include only one VGH song, usually lasting less than 2 minutes.
Literally thousands of "old time radio" shows are currently available commercially on cassette and/or CD, many of which contain live VGH performances. But I know of NO source for VGH performances extracted from any of these shows, which may often be the only place in which a particular song was performed by a particular group.
One notable exception to these "lost" performances are those by artists who appeared on Alan Freed's Camel Rock 'N' Roll Dance Party on the CBS radio network in 1956, and which have been the subject of several LPs, audio cassettes, and CDs. Information about performances on the Freed show can be found here.
I have just begun excerpting "uncollected" performances from various radio show recordings in my personal collection, and compiling a list of the songs performed. My initial effort appears below.
