THE JUBALAIRES, - TRANSCRIPTION RECORDINGS -
(Old Time Records CD #OTR-111)

Here's another collection of transcription recordings from Old Time Records for your consideration. This package features 20 tracks by the Jubalaires, all lifted from 2 discs originally leased to radio stations by Standard Transcriptions, the RCA Victor transcription subsidiary, around 1946.

The group had "regular record" releases on Decca in 1944/1950, on King/Queen (as the Jubilaires) in 1947/1950, on Capitol in 1949 and 1951, and on Crown (as the Original Jubalaires) in the early 1950's.

Very little is known about the Jubalaires, one of the quality vocal groups of the 1940s. John Jennings, Orville Brooks, Caleb Ginyard, Theodore (Ted) Brooks, George McFadden were the group's members in 1946. Bill Johnson joined as a guitar player in 1946 and played with them on CBS radio and at the Apollo theatre. He was with them when they went on a southern tour and Willie Johnson of the Golden Gate Quartet was added as their sixth voice beginning in Jacksonville, FL. As the Jubalaires headed out to California on tour, they ended up signing on to replace the Delta Rhythm Boys on the Amos & Andy radio show (the Deltas had in turn replaced the Four Knights).

They returned to New York briefly before relocating permanently to California. While they were in New York in 1947, guitarist Bill Johnson decided to remain in New Jersey and left the group. Before long, Orville Brooks jumped to the Golden Gate Quartet and Ginyard shifted his attention to the Dixie-Aires and, later in the '50s, the Golden Gate Quartet. Ginyard was still with them when they waxed for King/Queen in LA in 1947/49 but Johnson was not.

Several tracks feature a bass lead, which should appeal to fans of such groups as the Ravens. Regrettably, as with other Old Time releases, there are NO liner notes, but the music alone sells this one. Lots of smooth harmonies here on tunes that are not heard often nowadays. A good vocal harmony "time machine" - get on board!
