ALBUM REVIEW

JUBILEE JEZEBELS
(Sequel CDs # NEM CD 750 & NEM CD 916)

These releases from the now-defunct Sequel label of the United Kingdom showcase the distaff side of Jerry Blaine's Jubilee, Josie, and Port labels and cover recordings in the "blues and rhythm" vein laid down between 1952 and 1964, including some tracks that had been "in the can" until they were "rescued" by Sequel. The CDs were issued in 1995 and 1997 respectively, and show up (even in unopened condition) from time to time in the resale market.

The performers in this set include Edna McGriff, Little Sylvia [Vanderpool, then Robinson] (later of "Mickey and..." and then just as "Sylvia"), Viola Watkins (backed by the Four Notes, who later became the Crows of Gee fame), an early Della Reese, Gloria Alleyne (later to make it big as Gloria Lynne), Big Maybelle, the Enchanters (an early female r&b group), and a few others.

Each volume is accompanied by a 12-page booklet of respectable liner notes which help to place these recordings in context, which is the norm for releases on Sequel.

These 2 CDs are well worth getting, if you can find them.
