MOTOR CITY - DETROIT DOO-WOPS - THE DIABLOS - Vols. 1 & 2 -
(Regency CDs # RR.111 & RR.112)

These 2 CDs from Canada's Regency label were released in 1995, and may not be easy to find. However, they are definitely worth pursuing, as they are the most complete collection of the Diablos' work that is available - a total of 51 tracks, including a few unreleased tracks, outtakes and demos.

The Diablos had the misfortune of never achieving recognition commensurate with their talent. Jack and Devora Brown's Fortune label was just not the economic powerhouse necessary to sufficiently promote its products. Nolan Strong's clear first tenor / contralto voice cannot always be classified as a "falsetto." There is often nothing "false" or "strained" about his performance. If you are only familiar with The Wind from the Jesters' 1960 re-make, you'll be amazed how Jesters lead Adam Jackson's falsetto pales before Nolan's smooth delivery.

Liner notes tell the group's history, and some of the history of the Fortune label adequately. But they lack any significant discographical information, which would have made these CDs a "perfect" set.

Rumor has it that this set is "unauthorized," but in the absence of any other comparable package - including the Fortune Of Hits CD out of Europe with only 24 tracks - it remains the best Diablos collection around.

A brief write-up on the Diablos can be found on John Charles Marion's Website.
