THE DECCA ROCK 'N' ROLL COLLECTION -
(MCA Decca 2 CD set # MCAD2-11119)
This 1994 package from MCA, now apparently out of print, contains a wide selection of music originally released on the Decca label and its subsidiaries, Coral and Brunswick. Its interpretation of "rock 'n' roll" is relatively broad, incorporating some jazz, R&B, hillbilly, and blues elements as well as tunes generally accepted as "rock 'n' roll."
While somewhat eclectic, the selections' diversity is also the charm of this collection, which ranges from the popular to the obscure, as the track listing below will clearly demonstrate. The 24-page booklet contains a 14-page illustrated essay by Canadian music historian Colin Escott describing the package's content in sufficient detail. The pictures are pretty much the usual artist shots, but I particularly like the pic of Bill Haley and his Comets, with Al Rex "riding" his bass:
Worth seeking out.
