This 1991 offering from the now-defunct Vintage Jazz Classics label
contains 102 tracks on 4 CDs - almost 4 1/2 hours - of early
Nat Cole, quite often vocalizing with the rest of the trio - Oscar
Moore (guitar) and Wesley Prince (bass). Other tracks are strictly
instrumental offerings by the trio in a "light jazz / easy jive" vein;
while at still other times the trio provides accompaniment for other
vocalists.
The tracks recorded here were never intended for release on home-consumption
phonograph records, but were released on transcription discs which were
sold exclusively to radio stations for broadcast purposes. The
transcriptions in this package were recorded by Standard Transcriptions
and Davis & Schwegler (both of Hollywood, California). Several of the transcriptions of both companies were subsequently re-released on Keystone Broadcasting System transcriptions; I have listed only the original release numbers in the track listing below. Transcriptions were the first long-playing records, at 33 1/3 r.p.m., usually 16 inches in diameter, with as many as 5 tracks per side, and often played from the "inside-out" - starting near the center of the disc, with the needle tracking outward. At least as often as not, one side would feature one artist, and the flip side
would feature a completely different one.
If your only knowledge of Nat Cole is his later work as a "mellow" pop
vocalist, this set is an opportunity to examine Nat in his "jazzy"
formative years. A broad spectrum of material, easy to listen to, but,
regrettably, now hard to find. The 16-page booklet is chock-full of
background and places the tunes in chronological order [as they are
found on the 4 CDs], with considerable detail.
