ALBUM REVIEW
THE COASTERS - ONE BY ONE -
This out-of-print album, at one time reissued on CD in England as Sequel #870 (with 13 "bonus tracks" of more ordinary Coasters' material [many are previously unreleased alternate takes] - and now out-of-print, too), should be subtitled: The album contains a dozen old standards, each performed by a member of the Coasters in a traditional manner with full orchestration, some with the group in the background, some strictly solo. This album gave each artist the opportunity to explore his talent as a "pop/jazz" singer, and the results are uniformly good. Another surprise is that this was produced
by the Coasters' usual producers, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller - not
their usual fare either. Truly a demonstration of the talents of the
performers and producers, taking themselves beyond the ordinary to
deliver a series of musical surprises. If you like the old standards, you're in for a treat if you can find
a copy of this album (or the Sequel CD). Side 1:
