ALAN FREED'S TOP 25 CHARTS

When Alan Freed was reigning as the "King of Rock 'N' Roll" on WINS radio in New York, he published weekly "Top 25" lists, five of which appear on this Web site. The partial list for February 12, 1955, is from an air check of most of the WINS "Rock 'N' Roll Party" broadcast of that date. The May 22, 1955, list is from John Charles Marion's Doo Wop Nation E-zine. The other 3 lists were reprinted in Bim Bam Boom Magazine in 1971 and 1972.

It must be remembered that Freed was able to "create" whatever "Top 25" he chose, despite his claims that they were the results of a "survey" of requests and of record sales, as the lists were not subject to any kind of oversight. They thus reflect his own tastes and prejudices at least as much as his listeners' preferences. We have reproduced the lists to give you an idea of what Freed's taste in Rock 'N' Roll was in 1955 and 1956.
