WESTERN THEBES
Colossi of Memnon
The pharaohs of the New Kingdom built their magnificent temples on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes. The Colossi of Memnon are giant statues of the pharaoh Amenhotep III. The Ramesseum is a memorial temple built for the pharaoh Ramesses II. Deir Al-Medina is home to the remains of the workers' village and the tombs of the craftsmen. The Temple of Ramesses II at Medinet Habu is the largest and best preserved royal cult temple in Thebes. The Temple of Sety I, father of Ramesses II, was principally built for the god Amun. The Valley of the Kings is home to 58 known tombs, including Tutankhamun's.
